Hey, this post is so I can hear some of your reactions to how Social Groups are present in my High School (yes, I realize they are present at 99% of other High Schools in America). I just would like to see what you think, and if you belonged to any of these.

IThe Populars - Care free, nice clothes, very rich parents, usually good at some sports, decent grades for the most part, it appears as though their lifes are good. I wouldn't know. Note Every "popular" kid at our school wears some form of a color band around their wrist. Apparently though, the yellow Livestrong ones are "out" and blue, orange, or green ones are "in". To tell you the truth, I could care less.

II The Preps - They wear strictly expensive name brands and drive the best cars. You can see a prep from a mile away with the walk. The "prep" walk. They usually pass most of their classes by sucking up and getting C's and D's though some work really hard and get great grades. They love to smile at you and be your friend though you almost always realize that they are just doing it for themselves (there are always exceptions as some preps are really friendly people).

III The Tech. Geeks - One of my groups. We like gadgets and talk about all of the new electronics getting released. Math is cool, science isn't as much to us. There is some kind of rival between the Tech. Geeks and the Nerds as to whom can pull off the highest GPA.

IV The Goths - They wear darker (black) clothing, when allowed. They like dark metal rock music and especially the ever so pain filled screamo rock. They don't like to show emotion and are content in being secluded from the outside, "fake" world. I have talked to goths at my school before and they are actually really nice people.

V The Punks - They go to Battle of the Bands Concerts every other weekend and burn thousands of CD's, carry them around, and blast their CD players as loud as they possibly can. They do not like it when people are in their ways in the halls.

VI The Plastics - Adapted from Mean Girls, the plastics have evolved to a not only all girl club, but with some guys too. They absolutley feel as though they own every other member of the student body and talk about people in the most nasty ways known to man. If a plastic sparks a rumor, it's around the school in less than twenty minutes and at least half of the people who hear it think it could possibly be true.

VII The Jocks - Some are cool, some are just assholes. I suppose I sort of belong in this group as I play Football (but because I play tennis, I am shunned as this group is only Baseball (as well as Softball), Football, and Basketball players). They are known to not get the best grades but pass as some teachers like them more than others. Some, however are straight A students who get looked up to a lot.

VIII The Uncool Nerds - Good grades, high waters, glasses, braces, strange look on their faces, think studying is the hottest thing since sliced bread. And people just don't like them, I think there cool.

IX The Cool Nerds - Same as above but for some reason people like them and want to be their friends. The division between the uncool and cool nerds puzzles me to this day.

X The Loners - These people have nobody to hang with and sit by themselves at lunch. I don't think they are happy, but I wouldn't know.

XI The Druggies/Alchoholics - Also known as the boozers, a couple of people belong to this group. At my school, they are looked down upon as they exceed the norm of occasional underage drinking.

XII The Band Geeks - Self Explanitory

XIII Theatre, Drama, Art Geeks - Again, Self Explanitory

Do realize that many people belong in many groups and I don't think that one person belongs to only one group.

Also, sometimes groups are nonexistant, and other times they are (like when a big party is going to take place and the invitations go out).

High School for me is good, I have friends and I like being there.

Did you?

We were the kids with connections and knew how to have the best time.

My best friend had a few acres surrounding his house, including an abandoned barn. We rocked the shlit out of that place every day D

Same with me. Luckily, I went to a school with a big theatre/ art program so we really didn't have cliques like that.

I'm in the top 2% of my class (#1 among white people), but I have plenty of friends. I wear normal clothes. Where's my category?

Godrockdj

20-04-2005 15:28:17

We had all of those cliques and more. Basically, I was a renaissance girl in that I had friends in almost every group. Some major ones you left out were the club sectionals - Band freaks (me), theater, art kids, etc.

nate08 - is this part of a sociology thesis/experiment? Although it is impossible to indentify each group with clear-cut distinction, I think you've done a brilliant job here.

I played multiple varsity sports, was given the "best dressed" superlative in a yearbook one year ) , 3.8 GPA, member of a handful of clubs, I smoked alot of pot but I didn't make it obvious so not many people know, always had a steady girlfriend...not sure what else to list.

As far as what group(s) I feel I belong to...I don't really like to identify myself with any one group. I firmly believe that "in the end, the universe tends to unfold as it should" (Harold and Kumar), so I really try to get along with everyone. If someone rubs me wrong...for the most part I'll just ignore them. Eh--- I don't really have anything else thoughtful to say.

Along with the cliques you mentioned, we had the weirdo Techies. The techies pretty much did all the, well, technical stuff (lighting, sound, props, costumes) for the theatre productions. They wore bandanas and talked like robots.

I'm the only one in my school who does websites in such a scale that I do yet I don't think anyone hates me. I dress fine all the time and always have manners.

Pretty well rounded )

Ours is like the above with a couple of changes. Mostly everyone did drugs, jocks preps some nerds. I guess we have a high drug usage because we are a wealthy school district. And the high authority denies it exists half the time, it owns.

One would assume that if you were voted Best Dressed at some point then you still take some pride in dressing nicely now.

You know I almost didn't read this thread...

I have to say my High School days were great. I think I either was considered a member of atleast 5 of those groups. I however would not alienate any of the lower social classes. I actually stuck up for them whenever needed. I don't think kids have changed all that much in my 10 years after high school.

The one thing you kids have to remember is, whether your popular or not, some of the people that are not in your social class are good people once you get to know them. You should always have an open mind...

Oh and just don't do too much of XI, we like you alive here!
