Each step is roughly double the requirement of the last one.
This is because when the graphic artist made the iPods he only made seven wide. The idea is that it's not hard to get to the 3rd or 4th level but 5th, 6th, and 7th usually take a lot of dedication. IMO it's the best way to do it, because it rewards only a few people with the highest level.
