Graphic Artists - Be Immortalized and Win A Prize!

We need post icons. You can see the ultra-crappy ones I've already made, such as

But they suck. So your challenge is to create a large set of versatile icons for all kinds of topics. Like "off-topic", "stupid", "scam", "funny", etc. Take a look at the ones on http//forum.somethingawful.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=1 for ideas. There should also be icons for all the freesites out there, like FPC == FreeDesktopPC.

Icons should be 15 to 20px high and no more than 50px wide. The execution, acronyms, and other logistics are up to you.

Whoever makes the best set will win 24 hours of link time either on here on the forums or on the main page.

Is there a deadline? There's a lot of programs out the check out download.com

I'd recommend Photoshop or ImageReady or Illustrator or Paint Shop Pro or whatever it is that you're good at. If you don't already have a preference, this contest probably isn't for you.

and think how distracting it would be to have a whole page full of animated post icons. the insanity!

i like this idea though, should they have transparent backgrounds so they work if the site colors change?

If it's not too much trouble, sure. But really as long as they fit in it's fine.

I'd suggest only making ANNOUNCEMENT or STICKY tags animated, as too many animations slow down older computers, and look like crap.

I definitely prefer clarity over flashiness on this one.

Negative, far to much of a "plastic" look to it. If you're going to toy with the filters...try something outside the "Bevel and Emboss" area )

I like them, but some look a little bit off, like you rushed them. Specifically, the PSP.4 and DVR.4 and MP3.4.

I also don't like the wording on FIPOD - maybe just FIP or iPods.

PSPs would look better than FPSP, as well.

Other than that, not bad. They match the scheme and are nice and simple.

changed the FIP and PSP ones, will work on the psp4 dvr4 and mp34 a little bit later, thx for the feedback

Just stopped by the site for the first time in a couple weeks...The designs of these new icons are nice for sure, but they're unnecessary, clutter up what used to be a fast streamlined site and slow down load times (and I'm on a T1 line and P3.2/1GB computer). More to the point, no one looks at them and they don't help to distinguish the threads IMO.

That's not to say I won't keep coming back here, it's just constructive criticism.

The files are very small and any modern browser will cache them, so I don't think that network speed is the issue. As I add features, more mysql db hits become necessary. I think that's why the site has been a little slower loading lately. I will look in to optimizing the code. Yours is the first thing I've heard about the icons that hasn't been positive. That doesn't mean that your criticism is invalid, but I have to keep in mind the wishes of the many rather than the few.

If you really cannot stand them, they're not hard to adblock (assuming you have firefox with adblock installed).

Yeah I can understand the wishes of many versus those of a few. I've had quite a bit of forum moderation experience...good and bad.

In any case, I appreciate the site and it has helped me quite a bit. Thanks for running it.

yes, i agree.
they seem to clutter up the place and my eyes seem to be drawn to them, giving me a tendancy to ignore the threads w/o them
but, i guess it's just a few opinions agains the mass
