Anyone good with computers?

I have a sucky problem. A few days ago, my internet started running VERY slow. Like dialup slow. I'm on cable. There are 2 other comptuer in the house, and we are all connected to the same router, ISP...etc...I ran a bandwith test , and saw that compared to the normal cable speed in Hawaii (and with the 2 other computers here), I'm at capital SLOW. Like 1/30 the speed of normal cable here in Hawaii. I have no idea why. Even my dads computer here is above average speed for Hawaii cable. My sister's is just as speedy as ever. I'm not sure if it's spyware. I've got SpyBot Search and Destroy, AdAware, and had Microsoft Anti Spyware, and none of them picked anything up yesterday. I ran a HijackThis scan, but have no idea what to fix. So comptuer geniuses know why it's like this? Could the Ethernet cable I have be bad? Or not? What is it? HELP!

May sound stupid.. try using USB, see if the rate picks up. Does the network connection say "Limited or No Activity"? I am a linux man, so I am not too keen on how Windows works.

check if other computers are downloading a lot of stuff, also try resetting the network. If that dosent fix it then check for virus and such

sounds like u have a virus, or some kind of internet sharing program thats upload cap is set way too high, or some kinda toolbar that is downloading tons of spyware lol



my reccomendations Format the PC , ask me how if you want detailed info...itll be back to the way it was when you bought it after.

Yeah, definitely reset your cable modem and router... unplug their power supplies and let them sit for a few minutes. Should do the trick

You should also make sure that your antivirus and spyware programs are fully updated.

I reset the modem and router twice today. I also ran Search And Destroy, but only got the normal DSO Exploit, and another Wild Tangent Which I both deleted. I use a internet sharing program, but it's not on very much, and when it is on, I had already set the upload cap to like 2 or so.

well this is a shot in the dark but i have had this problem. If you have your modem coming from a splitter that is attached to several things. in my room i had a splitter connecting my tv,computer,modem and after about 3 months of that the modem could no longer keep up so i use just a two way splitter and it works great again. i have also had a friend who had to switch the room his computer was in because of this. if you are using a splitter try running the coaxial cable stright to the wall.hopefully it is something that simple.

That could definately be a possibility...when i got my cable modem, cablevision installed a dedicated line for me even though there was a working cable in the next room, hooked up to a box

Hmmm Not really sure what you mean, but the only thing that I have in my room hooked up to that router/modem is the comptuer. The tv doesn't have cable.

turn of all computers but one, and see if that fixes the problem. uploading at full speed kills the connection, so maybe some of the computers have spyware that uploads all the time.

also make sure ur isp didn't set a cap at u. some do if u download too much in a month...

Do you have any software firewalls running? Check your msconfig for startup programs that look odd and also ctrl alt del and check for unusual processes.

Reboot into safe mode w/ networking and see if the speed is back up to normal.

A bandwidth cap is not going to have anything to do with other computers in his house working fine while his isn't.

Network card or cable can be the culprit. Also one of the cheaper solutions.

Try the cable with another connection and see what that does. If it's fine, try using a different network card in your machine.

Network cards go bad ALL the time, but usually they're only about $15-20 (on average, hence the word "usually").

If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what to tell you.
