what happens to your cell phone when you move?

When you move, what happens with your cell phone? The reason I'm asking is I want to get a cell phone, but I'm leaving for college in the fall. Its not too far away (about a 1.5 hour drive), so would it still work? I really have no idea how any of this stuff works, so if someone could enlighten me I'd appreciate it )

It all depends on if your provider has service in that area. If the town has a college, chances are very good, it would work.

If you have free roaming, and your cell phone company is a national company (T-Mobile, Cingular, etc), then it'll most likely just work as normal.

I noticed while looking for a plan that free roaming is only on the provider's network. Does that mean that if you leave your calling area, and you call someone who isn't using the same provider as you, you'll get charged extra?

I think that means that if you go to a place where that company doesnt have their own cell towers, and you have to use another cell company's network/cell towers to make the calls. Aslong as theres coverage in the coverage map of where you'll be making the call from, you should be fine.
