I just placed the order for my freeipod and I was thinking since Apple is releasing the new color 20gig, could I take mine to the apple store and get a color 20 gig if I say it was a gift or something.

people trade their ipods at stores and upgrade them or get store credit all the time....there was a whole thread about a while back.
whether you can exchange the regular one for the colour one may be a little different. but maybe not.
i guess the only real way to find out would be to try it.

Regular with color screen.

I doubt everyone can just walk in with their old ipods for a "free" upgrade. But since yours will be sealed, I am sure you could bring it back to the store. To be safe, you could go in ask for store credit, then come back later and get the color one.

Apple today announced that the iPod and iPod photo lines are merging, creating a single line of white iPods that all feature color displays with the ability to view album artwork, photos and play slideshows in stunning color.
The simplified iPod lineup features a 20GB model, holding up to 5,000 songs priced at just $299 and a 60GB model, holding up to 15,000 songs priced at $399. Also starting today, iPods will offer an easy to use Podcast menu, including bookmarking within a Podcast and the ability to display Podcast artwork in color.[/quote27a6700015]

Decile, most likely you'll be able to exchange your iPod for the Color iPod - many many people have attempted that, and most of them have had success. Search in the forum, and you'll see a lot of posts regarding this

Well, I think what some have been saying lately is true. My gf called the local apple store, and they said they would accept the exchange but the price would be depreciated for the old 20G ipod (dunno what) and that it has to come from an apple store or their online store with receipt.
Maybe I'll just sell it on ebay.

Wait, isn't the photo iPod just the regular one with a color screen? Or is there some other difference I don't know about?

Photo ipods have video-out so you can view pictures on TV. The new 20G ipods are photo so they don't just have a color screen.

my first freebie (IPOD 20GB) is supposed to be arriving thursday or friday. I called the apple store last week and asked them if i could return this in the box and pay the difference between the 30GB color one, and they said no problem. I hope they still got this 30GB Color one in stock..

I ordered my ipod from freeipods.com on the day that the new line of ipods was released. They now only sell 20 GB and 60 GB Photo Color iPods.
20 GB - $300
60 GB - $400
I got my non-color 20 GB ipod in the mail yesterday, took it to the apple store, said I wanted to upgrade from the 20 non-color to a color photo ipod.
The return price for my ipod was $269.99 and with my educational discount I was given the choice of getting a 20 GB color for free ($269.99 after edu discount wipes clear the exchange) or getting a 60 GB ipod Photo for $100. I opted for the 60 GB and walked out of the store with it, a reciept, and a 1 year warranty
20 GB non-color + $105 + Proof of being a student = 60 GB ipod Photo
20 GB non-color + Proof of being a student = 20 GB ipod Photo

that's very nice to know, thanks!!
I believe some stores still allow you to return the 20 gig for store credit and purchase a 30 gig photo with educational discount for <$20. That's what I've read before, going to try it once I finish.
