2) this, and every other "hacking" that has ever happened in the freesite world has just been someone guessing an admin's password. It's not hacking. Its just admins not having secure enough passwords.

Yes, it's the second time a password was stolen. I really don't know what happened on the forums at A4F, but they were able to bring down the server. They stole my password for this site and A4F, but not for any freebie sites and I have since changed all my passwords. Whoever did it used a proxy, so I am probably SOL as far as finding them, but since Wes owns the site, it's his job. It's quite annoying that some people have nothing better to dothen try and hack A4F. The host is working on a backup, which is supposed to happen daily, so I hope the server will be backup soon. If not, i'll be out till tomorrow afternoon and Wes will handle it.

Everything wasn't lost, but things are messed. For example, mods and groups are completely messed. The reason is that when I restored the old backup (which I thought was new), it added a bunch of old mods/people, so things are not exactly going well. It's too much work to fix easily, so I need to talk to surpass and find out what the hell is going on with the backup.

You deal with Surpass? I have reseller hosting from them and they had a big server crash or something a few months ago. And when they were restoring sites they would put in backups that were months old. Finally in the end they put in more recent backups.

14 days of daily backups totalling some 8.3 gigabytes - the rest is log file copies (which, uncompressed, are probably 30-40gb).
Thats on my computer at home. Two other boxes (one in Alabama and one in Florida) get a daily backup as well. All the transfers are done over secure protocols.
But none of this matters, because the weakest point in any security system is the humans operating it. Meaning, IF YOU HAVE ANY KIND OF ACCESS, PICK A GOOD PASSWORD!
P.S. if any a4f members do show up here, please do your best to be patient and kind (since the forums are obviously run differently)

UPDATE Eman, one of the server techs at surpass seems to be pretty confident he can get the correct backups working. Cpanel has not been backing up correctly, so we are going to see if the mysql direct backups exist. It seems they do, but hopefully by tomorrow we will be back up. More news as it becomes available. Yeah, essentially surpass sucks. But, I do have good news. We did a backup after the hacker but before we tried to restore. This means that although the trade topics will be lost, members, and everything else should be just fine. Congas, and trade records should be fine. I will have to restore the mods and I'm waiting to hear back from Wes, so bottom line, I hope it will be up tomorrow.
Also, we have some tips on the hacker. If anyone knows anything, please pm me so we can get this guy. Thanks.

I don't think there's really much you can do, since (at least from what he did on fipg) he was using a proxy.
Even so, most bigbox cable providers couldn't care less about abuse reports. The absolute most you can hope for is that they get their internet account dropped... but thats pretty unlikely.

Yeah, unfortunately, I'm an idiot and I shut myself out of the admin panel while trying to fix permissions for some mods. Right now, Trevor is the only one with access to the site, so it'll be back in a few hours or sometime tomorrow.
EDIT - And I looked at my Private Messages and none were there, so I'm not sure. Also, all trade threads have been wiped out, but I restored the Trader Feedback while I was still in there.

Our host is absolutely horrible. I can't imagine we are overloading the damn server, and now that I got the site back up, the server is back down! I can't believe it..hopefully it will be back up..there has to be something putting a huge load on it.

Good luck with getting anyone outside of anything4free to care. It's hard to convince local police, or ISPs that small time "hackers" (and I use that term very loosely) are of any consequence to their daily work.

This is a problem with the server/provider. I'm not an administrator, so i'm not sure if we have a dedicated server or not. We may not even have remote shell access to it much less physical access to even fix the problem. With neither trevor or wes around there's nothing we can do.
If it were my choice we would've gone with a different hosting company from the start.
As or the hacker/password stealer, we're likely not gong to catch the guy, and even if we got some information on him I doubt any authorities would care.

I tried helping them out, but it's a jailed/shared setup and they don't even have access to access or error logs (except through cpanel), so I can't tail -f and see what's going on. Plus the mysql daemon seems overloaded. Overall, both cpanel and the host they use are utterly craptastic.
