I feel bad about the damage Katrina caused, but...
They knew it was comming days before it came.
People had all the time in the world to get their belongings and take off.
All I've been seeing on the news is these MORONS sitting on the top of their houses waiting for rescuers to pick them up.
You know what I say?
"Hope you know how to swim..."
Some people were too poor to leave.
Others probably didn't have any place to go anyway.
It really sucks for those people.
Thanks Dubya, for sending the National Guard to Iraq instead of keeping them where they would be needed during hurricane season and for cutting the funds that were supposed to be used to strengthen the levees in New Orleans.
[quote81978bee3f="Jake"]Some people were too poor to leave.[/quote81978bee3f]
Stop right there.
There was so much evidence that Katrina was going to hit New Orleans and do some serious damage, that they starte evacuating the entire city days before the storm hit.
I dont care how poor I am, once I saw the pictures on the TV of the I-10 backed up for as far as the eye could see with people trying to get the hell out of dodge, I would have started walking to the Stadium.
Or even sold my TV and went to Aunt Nellys.
Sure maybe not every one of those people stranded had the chance to leave, but I think ignorance and even laziness played a big part in it.
Now we have to waste precious dollars and manhours picking people off rooftops. Just doesn't make much sense to me
[quoteebe7d5dd05="wood"] I would have started walking to the Stadium.
[/quoteebe7d5dd05]
Yeah, they should have gone somewhere, you do have a point there.
The stadium was a rough arrangement though. People stood in line for hours while senior citizens were being searched for illegal drugs and other crap that wasn't necessarily relevant.
When there is a football game, people are herded in really fast, but when people needed shelter from a storm, they are kept waiting for hours while having their constitutional rights violated.

It was a Cat 4. I think a few of those people stayed around to do some looting... but from what I saw on TV they weren't looting electronics, they were looting food and clothing.
Those levees should have been stronger, if funding was cut for them than blame the funders.
I also had a chance to listen to the mayor of New Orleans on CNN the other night and he doesn't seem like the most intelligent man in the world. Maybe that has something todo with evacuation mishap. He was saying that at a minimum the people in the Superdome will have to stay there another week.

Holy heck Sofa Sets you pop back in to talk about this?!
My thoughts - There are definitely ignorant people who had the able bodies to get out of there when the evactuation was ordered. They did not, and some say we should not bother to rescue them. I disagree. While I think they should be last on the rescue order list these actions are what distinguish us as humans instead of animals.
I feel horrible for the people that were legitimately trapped - the elderly, the sick, that just simply didn't have enough help to get them all out in time. On the opposite side of the scale however, whose bright idea was it to send people in the Superdome?! "I know, lets trap tens of thousands of people in an enclosed structure that's [i21ecbd7c26]below sea level[/i21ecbd7c26]..." Jeez.
Regardless of the many mistakes that could have prevented some of this let's all just keep the whole area in our thoughts and prayers.

Alright, well this is going to be my last post here because I got addicted to this shit and now with school I have to stop, but anyways...
I see what wood is trying to say and I somewhat agree. I think IF IT WAS AT ALL POSSIBLE for these people to leave, then they should have. I don't think they deserve what they got because, no matter what, I feel for them all and the losing of their homes and possessions. I think the "thrill seakers" that just wanted to ride it out because they think they are TOTALLY XTREME!!!!!, should be the very last ones to be helped, but it's not really possible to determine this. Just a stupid act on their part...

Hmmm... I am from a town not too far away from New Orleans. While I wasn't affected because I am in Atlanta for school. All of my family was. Thank god they all evacuated. Since this is so close to me I feel very strongly as do some who are all the way across the country. If you see from the news footage most of the people who didn't evacuate or were in the Superdome are people who didn't have any means of evacuating. Of course some people could have evacuated, but they didn't. Oh well, why dwell on it now. I don't know what some were thinking, but I'm fully aware that we've had many storms in that area where they told people to evacuate and people did and nothing came of it. These people have nothing and I think it's ridiculous to sit here and be angry about what they should have done. Lives were lost and no matter how much someone yells they should have evacuated, it's not going to help anything at all.
About Ray Nagin (The Mayor) he is a very competent man and even he was upset with how some of the things were going on. All this man is trying to do is take care of his city.
The looting - I see no problem with people getting diapers for their babies and food for their families. I do have a problem with the people I see getting bikes and nike tennis shoes.

It is hard to understand, I agree.
Louisiana is a very poor state, the cities that were hit are easily some of the most poverty stricken areas in the country.
Their belongings, everything they worked for and have is in that house/apartment. We might understand it is easily replaced, but to them...
People did start leaving rather quickly. Traffic was so congested two days before Katrina hit, that it would have taken 24 hours just to get to a Texas city 7 hours away. People were likely still in their cars when it hit...
And you can't blame them for not leaving quicker, the severity of the situation wasn't heightened until the last 24-48 hours before she struck.
New Orleans is just a big bowl. All that water comes in, but where does it go out? It doesn't.
And it is very dangerous to go outside at this point -- fire ants, various reptiles and animals cover the area, not to mention the toxic 'sludge' covering the city and your home... that is, if your home wasn't swept away as if it never existed.
With all the people crammed into the dome like that, illness will start spreading. People are murdering eachother in there already.
I suspect the death toll has reached easily a couple thousand. It will be awhile before we have a real estimate.
Funnily enough, for once the media isn't sensationalizing something to the point of ridiculousness. In the coverage I have seen on my local news, it is really trying to step around the dire devastation of this situation.

Oh, and I adore their mayor.
It really is an absolute trajedy.
And I'm serious when I say that I have laid in bed and prayed for these people.
Thats why I was upset about some of the people who chose to stay for no reason whatsoever.
Retro
31-08-2005 13:11:34
Gatita the death told is no where near thousands. Right now it's at about 120 even though it will rise it won't be in the thousands.
And there are pumps that are supposed to pump the water out of the city but clearly those pumps are inoperable because of Katrina.
New Orleans is being evacuated completely. People in the dome are being bused to Houston.
Gatita
31-08-2005 13:13:47
From what I see, 1,000 is a kind estimate.
Think about it... only a quarter of the city evacuated. So many people stayed in there houses...
They aren't checking for dead bodies, they are checking for suvivors. There are obvious deaths like the 30 who died from the apartment bricks falling on them, but people who stayed behind? It will grow rapidly, just like the Tsunami went from 300 in the beginning (though of course not that drastically).
Like I said, coverage is being really tip toed around. The severity is extreme.

the people who you see sitting on top of roofs are "thugs" as some would say. they did not think it was going to be a big deal or whatever. i have sympathy for those that had the ability to leave new orleans but not the ones that did. in fact, i despise them.

I scammed at least 20 people from this forum and countless others from other places. It was never my intention to do so, but it happened. Many of my "victims" were people that I considered friends.
But that fact still doesn't change you or the way that others perceive you. You will always be you and in my mind that really sucks. There is really no reason to speak negatively about anyone involved in this tragedy.[/quote9eb64f626f]

Even if I was disabled common sense would be to get the hell out of there. The city is below sea level people. Welll actually now its at sea level. Very smart people. In reference to the last post, New Orleans is one of the poorest cities in the United States. Greyhound and other such services should have been put into use as shuttles (free ones) as soon as the evacuation was sounded.

They aren't going to tell you to evacuate for no reason, and clearly a cat4 hurricane is going to be one of those times.
shamash
31-08-2005 17:03:09
But before they had free, good evacuation, it wasn't easy for the 1000s and 1000s of homeless people in New Orleans to just all get up and move. They can't afford food to travel with, they have no cars to get into the hours and hours of traffic.
It's really not easy for some people.

And for college Id really consider transfering at this pointunless they change the name to the Louisania Maritime University. Thx for the read Jake and I read another article that stated that many people stayed behind bc of hurriocane fatigue ; ie they didnbt think it would be severe. Wood, you are thee most idiotic immature kid on these forums. And how do i know your a kid you may ask? Anyone still using the word "Noob" by age 21 is a deadbeat loser who needs to get a life. Got it? And last time i checked "Go Home Noob" isnt exactly making a complete thought out of your post. So lets review, you are officially a hypocrite, idiot, and immature kid. Shall we go on?
You might be too stuck up and rich to understand this concept but i will try to explain it in lamens terms for you. The hurricane wasnt originally destined to hit New Orleans, but rather a small town a bit aways from it. Thus, people didnt have days and days to evacuate like you said. As one woman said in a news report "I woke up to the radio saying the hurricane shifted towards New Orleans. I immedietly grabbed my kids and left. My Neighbors who were not able to get the message were killed"(paraphrase).
Secondly, imagine working your whole life to obtain a roof over your head and a place to sleep. These people were poverty-stricken. They lived month to month! They had no where's to run! Their life, ALL THEY KNEW, was at their house. Every posession they ever worked for was with them. They didnt have the money to pay 3.50 for a gallon of gas nor enough money to pay for transportation. THEY HAD NOTHING! I've been to Africa twice and i have seen people with nothing! I have seen people fight over a piece of bread. Your small petifile mind does not and probably never will understand the concept of poverty, of being poor!
Get a grip and stop thinking of yourself as invincible. Not everyone is blessed enough to be born into a middle-class family where if their house is lost they can get through it. Stop critisizing people you do not know and start evaluating your own life. Not others!
Judge and you will be judged. I can guarentee you that.

Meh. I'm sorry for posting at all.
I shouldnt have joked about a serious situation, even if it was about the people who didn't take it seriously to begin with.
I am serious when I say that I have prayed for these people since day one. Funny how that was so easily overlooked, and my simple joke took the spotlight.
If half of you people were as honest and caring as you say you are, you wouldn't sit here some forum trying to flame me for some crude joke I've already admitted was improper.

If you read through the thread, there are some people who fail to see things this way.[/quote8302b3c788]
Yeah it seems that way, but I don't want to get too judgemental... wink

[quote3cdc2ad41b="wood"]Meh.
Let's all just move on and spend our time praying...FOR EVERYONE effected by this horrible catastrophe.
We as a country will pull through this, and will rebuild and live on.
May our hearts go out to all those who have been injured or displaced.
-Wood[/quote3cdc2ad41b]
And im sorry for flaming you as well. I have very strong feelings towards such issues as this and i am extremely strong willed. Thus, it is very hard for me to hold my tongue( ? , fingers) in such a situation. I find it very hard for me not to speak my mind about a serious issue. Esspecially a national crisis. Again, im sorry for flaming you. My apoligies,

Now Ivbe already expressed sympathy for those unable to get out of there but fact still remains as reported by the AP that people just refused to leave even though they couldve.
[quote7d7cebc46e="AP"]
Leave now, they said, this is one deadly storm.
But many residents stayed behind, and that is a big reason the death toll is so high.
Residents gave a range of reasons for making the life-and-death decision to stay, with many saying they were tired of evacuating from hurricanes after two recent storms that didn't live up to their threat. Some were worried about getting stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, leaving possessions behind, or running out of money on the road. Some simply discounted the threat.
"They said it was mandatory. But they did that last time," Pascagoula resident Wayne Mitchell said Wednesday. "The thinking was, they were crying wolf.
[/color7d7cebc46e]
"Well, this was the real wolf for sure," said the concrete-pouring business employee, who lost all his furniture, including a big-screen TV, when Katrina's storm surge swept through his home.
"I didn't think it was going to be that bad," said a stunned Landon Williams, a 19-year-old construction worker who had lived in Biloxi for less than two months. He lived in Quiet Water Beach apartments, where dozens of residents were feared dead and all that remained was a mountain of debris.
Last September, after seeing Florida pounded by three hurricanes, residents reacted to the approach of Hurricane Ivan. Some 400,000 drivers swarmed through Mississippi from Gulf Coast areas as they fled Ivan, clogging major highways in hours-long jams before Ivan hit to the east, causing little damage in Mississippi.
When Hurricane Dennis threatened last month, there were more jams, but authorities noted at the time that the number of evacuees appeared to drop off. Again, Mississippi and Louisiana were spared the brunt.
"I worry that we had a little hurricane fatigue," said Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour. "People boarded up for Ivan, evacuated and nothing happened. Then they boarded up for Dennis, evacuated and nothing happened. I think until very, very late, a lot of people thought, 'Ah, I'm not going to do that again.'"
Quawanda Pugh, 29, who works at the Imperial Palace and Casino in Biloxi, had fled from Ivan to Monroeville, La.
"I did think about evacuating, but we evacuated last time and spent some $200, and nothing happened," she said. "The highways are stressed. You don't have that much gas."
State authorities were focused Wednesday on search-and-rescue efforts and assessing the magnitude of the disaster, more so than reviewing last weekend's actions. Barbour and other officials said Mississippi authorities tried to push people, but some just wouldn't go along.

Now those are the people Im complaining about. Remember ignorance is bliss. These people had the choice and knowledge of the events but chose to otherwise. No compassion for them.
