I have a good wifi connection from a neighbors house, but I can only reach it if my laptop is by the window on a flat surface. I have read about wifi repeaters that can extend the connection further into my house, but i type it into ebay and nothing came up. Any recommendations for individual products, and a good antenna I can pick up to improve the connection strength?

Its called a wireless access point... it reads the signal from the router, and broadcasts it again, throughout your house.
But is this cool with your neighbor...?

its open, maybe I will tell them one day if I ever find out who it belongs to. What is the diff. between an AP and a bridge, or a "range expander". In general with networking products, I think they come out with multiple names for everything, and it just makes things more complicated.

Wireless APs and repeaters are 2 entirely different devices.

Just an example

so bottom line, what do I need, and what is a good price to pay?

What you are dong is completely illegal - unless you have permission from the network owner.

You will need to consult with them about using their network.

I'm not sure a repeater is what you want.
I believe that is something you have to set up inside the network.

The only solution I know for this situation, would be to get an actual antenna that you connect to your laptop.

These things aren't your typical antenna-looking things.
I used one during my internship to search for illegal wireless signals comming from the workplace.
It was a piece of PVC Piping (hard white plastic stuff with a wire comming out the one end. I hooked the wire right into the wireless card that was in my ethernet slot, and it boosted my signal almost 10x.

Don't ask me where to get the damn thing though...my boss got it from some underground website. I've been looking ever since...

I have definitely read of ones that will automatically pick up unprotected signals and repeat them. I guess no one here knows.

you could get an antennae, or if you know routers ip (start>run>cmd>ipconfig -all) you can connect in ie or firefox. since the person doesnt have a code of somesort i am sure they have the default password for the router. they are probably too stupid to know otherwise. if you are successful in logging in, it might help to change the channel the router is using. since cisco systems routers (linksys) are probably the most common the default password is "linksys" with no username.

I'm not going to cite specific legal cases, you can probably get that info off the netstumbler forums, but supposedly the critical issue is whether the AP owner implemented encryption or not. (Which is ridiculously easy to do)

One can argue the "my leaving my door open doesn't mean you're not robbing me" defense, but the APs signal is entering someone else's space. This is why people implement encryption, and use directional antennas to avoid access from the public.

I'd say that if you're living in a big city, the chances are high that the owner is aware, and intenionally sharing the connection. Especially if the SSID is "Free Internet!". ;)

If you want to repeat a signal, the previous link I posted shows this repeater[=http//www.hawkingtech.com/products/productlist.php?CatID=19&FamID=84&ProdID=241]this repeater which would seem to fit your needs.

However, I think you're pushing your luck by trying to extend a signal you're already getting for free.

You can get these everywhere, even from eBay. They're a step up from the pringles cantenna.
