With gas prices the way they are, I'm thinking about buying a Honda 50cc or 80cc to go to work and back. If you have one, how do you like it?

Just a 5 minute commute on 35mph streets, I wouldn't consider getting on the highway in a moped, lol. If my job moves I still think it would be good for running to mcdonalds, grabbing a movie, that kind of thing. I know gas prices are only going to go further up so I'm trying to think about the future.

then go for it. although you will be awfully cold in january. those small errands can take a toll on the gas tank, mine especially.

I drive a mustang v6. Gets about 20mpg in the city.
I probably wouldn't drive it in Jan-Feb, but our winters seem to be pretty short as you know.
Top speed on the 50cc is 40mph, it's got good acceleration though. I'd probably go for the 80cc Honda Elite, I haven't looked into Vespas though.

id love to have a scooter, but to get one of the old 60's ones like in Quadrophenia would probably cost a fortune.

Mopeds require an M class license anyways. At least in Texas they do.

I'm not sure if that's true if they are under 50cc. And both Honda and Vespa offer a 49cc mode. At that level it's still streeth legal the same way a bycicle is but you don't have to register it. I might be wrong though.

Taken from the Texas DMV website "The operator of a moped must hold a valid license as a moped operator (M-class license with a resctriction code of K)."
Yeah, stupid, I know. roll I found a moped in someone trash one time and was going tofix it up until I found that out.
And to be considered a moped it must be under 50cc and not be able to exceed 30mph. And it can't have manual shifting. Any larger than 50cc or faster than 30mph, or if it requires shifting, it is considered a motorcycle.

Ah interesting, so you'd need a motorcycle license to operate them. Pretty easy to get.

haha, I love it.
You know what though, I'd be doing it for the gas mileage, not the cool factor, but the Honda Metropolitan looks pretty cool. I'd get a Harley if the gas mileage was better.
