Abbreviating Japanese with Jap over the internet? It is a racial slur on wikipedia, but im not sure if it would offend over the internet if I shortened Japanese to Jap.

If I was Japanese it wouldn't bother me...but I don't think you'll get an opinion from someone from Japan, on this forum...

Yes it is a racial slur. It is a word deep rooted in their history and it definitely has negative connotations.
Better safe than sorry, many people are still very offended by that, with good reason.

YES! Everyone is different, and what offends one person may not offend the next (and vice versa). If you feel you shouldn't be saying it (which by making this post you obviously do)...DON'T SAY IT!. At least, that's my rule of thumb.

I don't think it's racist, but some oversensitive people might be offended. I understand where the term came from , but that was a long time ago. It's not racist to called british people brits.

JAP = Jewish American Princess to Jews
lol im jewish and I use that term all the time and I'll say it to some non-jew not thinking about how they might not know what context I mean it in, something like "Yeah my brothers dating this jap right now" you wouldn't believe the looks, not to mention the reactions I've gotten...

Would it be racist for me to abbreviate African America with nigger?
Did you answer that? Then you also found the answer to your question )
It doesn't matter which race it is
EDIT I don't intend on offending anyone by saying that, just asking a question
drummer_kew_03
12-09-2005 20:32:24
That's different though, it's not even an abbreviation.

It doesn't matter though, Jap is a slang word that is a put down towards the Japanese, its not that hard to type out Japanese anyway.
Btw, I'm not racist, BUT this kinda shit doesn't offend me at all, I could careless I'm just saying what some would to see your responses

Jap is not just shortening a word. There is a reason it is offensive...
It has a history going back to World War II. It was patriotic for Americans during that time to use racial slurs heavily.
We celebrated this, even in advertisements. It was liextremelyli derogatory and still is to many people, with very good reason.

You would say "you're a brit" to a british person.
You would say "You're Thai" to a person from Thailand.
Would you say "You're a jap" to a Japanese person?
Also refer to the "I love japs" thread created earlier...

Stop using the black and "n" word association. That has nothing to do with it, nor does it make sense with what we're talking about. A good analogy that relates to this would be calling them an abbreviation of african, like "afri".

Some people might see it as an abbreviation... But some Japanese's people could find it offensive... So its better to just say Japanese

It's probably racist... But if you were to call me a cracker I'd just laugh it off... Call someone else a cracker, they might try and sue you.
