How this compare to other things out there?

Also, how long until the aftermarket folks release an armband for the Nano? I'm not buying a pink, green, red, gray one from Apple for $30.

Are you going to workout with a hard drive based ipod? I cringe when I see people running with those big ipods on their arms. Wouldn't recommend it but it's your ipod I guess...

Gotcha. I've never considered using one before, so I have no idea what to look for.

Thanks.

The Apple store told me I'd be fine running with my iPod using an armband because the swing of your arms is pretty gentle when running, but using a belt clip is sure to cause problems because the iPod gets jarred with every step you take. Do you have a different experience?

Well, for me the problem is that the ipod will recieve shocks even on your arm, and hard drives don't generally like shocks, given its moving parts. I think anyone who knows about electronics or hard drives in particular will tell you that any shocks are bad for the life of a hard drive. It's true that it will receive less when it's on your arm as opposed to your hips, but still... I run at a decent pace and I know the shuffle on my arm isn't being babied like a raw egg.

I think that Apple would like you to run with your ipod, because the faster it conks out (hopefully after 1yr), the more they sell. (It can also be argued that people will buy less ipods if that happens becasue they think the quality sucks and so on I know...)

If I knew I was going to run with my iPod, I'd play only mp3s, and I wouldn't change tracks. I'd find a playlist I liked and press play, wait about 1-2 minutes, then start running. Every 30 minutes I'd stop and switch the playlist so that it would re-read the files.

The reason is, the iPod has a big cache where it stores upcoming songs. The cache is solid state and the hard drive's heads are parked when not in use. So the iPod is essentially reading off memory (like a shuffle) during MOST of normal use, which is why some people can go years of jogging without it breaking.

Thanks Admin - I knew that, but had forgotten it. Maybe I'll save my money and just get an armband for the Nano then.

Anyone know when the non OEM armbands should be out?

Interesting stuff, didn't know that. I still won't run with it though, I don't like the shocks even if the HD is idle.

I would do that. These goddamn accesories cost so much though. My gf bought me one for my shuffle but it was $30.
