I've been wanting to get a job doing computer repair or building while i'm in college. I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about A+ certification. How useful is it for getting a job, and how hard is it?

that is the only requirement for getting hired at compusa for computer repair. i passed the network+ exam the first try but i will probably neverr use the certification. my high school payed for it though so no worries.

I looked into this a while back. Its not particularly hard but it certainly doesn't qualify you to actually troubleshoot broken computers. I hope you have some other experience.

Its pretty much the baseline for computer certification right? Is it worth it to even try? It costs like 150 or something.

Odds are you'll never get a job in computer repair without the A+ certification, just about every place requires you to be certified before they hire you.

You shouldnt even waste your time, experience is key and when I started working for the computer company I am working for now I said I was going to take the A+ and my boss said dont waste your time. I went for my associates and it isnt even enough anymore like it used to be. So now I have my associates in IS but 1 1/2 years experience

It is a retarded exam. You have to pay 300$ to take it because it is 2 exams, Hardware and Software. You are only A+ certed after BOTH. I have the hardware already down, and that was easy as pie. Software is suppose to be a little harder but after some studying with one of thoose guides it is probaly easy to pass.

Best Buy will pay for my A+ certification so im probably going to take it. Not to mention ill probably get a raise once im certified.

I've found that the value of the ceritifcations are based on the amount of people cheating their way through.

For example, I am A+, N+, MCP+i, MCSE and these certs get ZERO respect from employers because they feel so many MS certs are paper certs who only passed because they cheated their way through (using question and answer dumps). There was a flood of certifications when it was thought to be the next HUGE money making career, but the IT bubble burst and all the playroom IT departments lost their nerf ball basketball nets and stopped letting the geeks wear jeans and t-shirts.

I reccomend the N+ and A+ exams, Cisco certs still get much respect, but i'd pass on the MS certs. I think those computer repair classes you see on TV get more respect then MS certs do.

I agree, even N+ is retardedly easy. A+ is basic entry level computer tech, and I can see it being useful. It is easy for someone who has spent the last 8 years on a computer, but a less comp literate person it is hard.

Cisco is pretty well respected, that is why I am still bumed out about getting a 825 on that test when you need a 850 to pass.

I'm in A+ cert. classes right now. I'm going to get MCSE and Cisco and Linux certs too )

With so many people looking for tech jobs its good to be certified in as much as possible.

Despite how much I love Cisco, and my cert, Cisco world is plagued by dick face brain dump people ass well.

It is like cheating to become a doctor and then these people get jobs and can't do shit.

Well I'd say thats pretty true for all of the certs, especially A+. It just about memorize crap thats going to be on the test, very little real world application. I already know a ton about computers and fixing shit but I just want the certs and the tech. experience.

I'm A+ certified.. and I'll tell you this... despite what people may tell you.. the hardware is something you'll want to hammer on rather than OS... with the Hardware test, they will NOT hesitate to throw you some ridiculous printer, monitor maintenence questions and how many MHz the ISA bus runs at, etc..

The OS is cake but you should still study that...

Good luck and I hope ya pass )

They offer Cisco classes/certs up to like level 4 I think in my school. I am thinking about taking it but a friend kinda talked me out of it. Said its a pretty hard class, and he hasnt even used his certification. Also I'd have to really want to get certified becasue the first course takes like 2 full school years I think.

Did anyone ever look into this further?

Can someone recommend a good study guide or is there a practice test floating around so I get a sense of whether I'll need to study.

Allen626

22-11-2005 20:25:38

It is worth it if you are going to enter into the tech industry at a corporation. Because they will usually look for this cert, but other then that it is too easy for serious work. Anything that is certified by CompTIA is good.

It depends on the person and their experience. Personally, the Hardware exam was easier for me, because i'm more into the hardware aspect.

I would recommend either buying or downloading an A+ Simulation program. No matter how much you study, you'll be surprised at some of the retarded questions they'll throw at you.

Did you use a book or simulation for studying?

Wolfeman

19-01-2006 20:16:01

I'm actually taking classes so I get both. A+ is kinda lame but MCSE seems like its going to really help...

I'm A+, and plan on taking my net+ and CCNA in the next couple months. I have been tinkering with PC's for a long time now, so I had knowledge of most of the stuff on A+. There are still things you just have to memorize even if they are irrelevant to today's troubleshooting.

The reason the OS test is harder is because you have to know the exact clicks to get to whatever it asks, and the multiple ways to do it. It's easy enough when you are at the PC, but since each OS is slightly different.

The only book I studied was Cristopher Crayton's "The A+ Exams Guide" which is good for just the things you need to memorize if you already have a good grasps on the subject. I picked it up at a used book store for 10 bucks, spent a week studying it. Did some practice tests, you can get the "official" transcender practice tests if you look around.

I totally agree xig. OS was too much little details. After I get MCSE, I'm getting CCNA, Security+, and Linux+...
