What the hell are newsgroups? I thought I knew a lot about stuff on the internet then this guy comes to install my cable and talks about how he uses "newsgroups" to download all of his movies and he makes his own movies. I felt like a dork, "I use Limewire..." I have downloaded torrents before but I always end up deleting them because of spyware and stuff. I think I may give them one more try though since all these sites were mentioned. Azerus or whatever is a good client to use? Can someone tell me how to use newsgroups like my cable guy and get movies? I feel like a newb when I shouldn't be. haha Help a brotha out.

Yeah I remember hearing usenet also. It's still confusing. A bit more info on getting a free client to access these servers, and then how do I go about getting something like movies from them?

agroman

07-12-2005 14:17:31

your isp most likely has a news server available for you to use. a good newsgroup program for windows is Forte Agent. but if you're into it for downloading movies and stuff you might like Newsleecher better.

check it out, if you haven't before. in most cases you'll get great speeds from your ISP's news server (with the dozens of ISP's I've used over the years I've never had a speed issue). the biggest problem is retention and available newsgroups. for a few bucks a month you can get a subscription to a private news server with great retention (~90 days in some cases for the binary groups) and ~99.9% of all the available newsgroups (check out giganews.com)

hell, more than likely you've already got one installed. Outlook Express can connect to usenet/news (NNTP) servers. I wouldn't recommend it though. ;)

cyberpunk243

07-12-2005 14:21:22

Yeah I found this article http//www.newsgroups.com/articles/download_free_movie.htm[]http//www.newsgroups.com/articles/download_free_movie.htm and it talks about the newsgroups and stuff. I guess it isn't possible to get a usenet server for free or whatever? They suggested one and also newsgroups of where to get movies. I guess I am a little unclear about it all. I should just call up my DSL provider and ask them for access to a newsgroup server? It WILL cost extra? If so, I guess my best bet would be to stick with torrents because they are free and I would rather not spend more money on DSL.

ajrock2000

07-12-2005 14:26:56

I use Torrentbytes for mostly everything. Speeds are insane, 700k+/sec, and the releases come out really fast. I get stuff from newsgroups when I want something bad enough. I would recommend using Newsbin and http//alt.binaries.nl if you have access to a good newsgroup service. Comcast gives 2GB/month (crappy, but w/e).

agroman

07-12-2005 14:26:59

Who is your provider? Like I said, most ISP's have them available free to use. In some cases you have to request access to connect, but they usually don't charge you extra for it. I know with my RoadRunner account I had to request access to all of the newsgroups (they "censor" by default).

Your ISP probably has the news server information posted up on their website around where they have the mail server information.

probably something like nntp.earthlink.net or news-server.kc.rr.com

agroman

07-12-2005 14:29:09

right on, the newsbin link is http//www.newzbin.com/ awesome site.

ajrock2000

Yeah, with alt.binaries.nl you can download the newzbin file directly without having to sift through newsgroups to find what you want. Extremely convenient...

07-12-2005 14:50:34

Cool. I just downloaded uTorrent and I will give it a try. So once I install it and make it the default torrent download program, do I just go to one of these sites and click on the file to start downloading? Do I need to configure anything?

ajrock2000

07-12-2005 14:52:11

You should be good...may want to put a cap on your upload bandwidth. ALthough DSL usually has better upload bandwidths..I got mine capped at 30k/sec, stupid comcast.

cyberpunk243

07-12-2005 14:54:15

I am trying to download GrizzlyMan from the Demon torrent site or whatever and right now it says, 0.3% done, 31.6kB/s download speed, 17.3kb/s upload speed. This is why I never liked torrents, is this supposed to be this slow?

ajrock2000

07-12-2005 14:56:19

Depends on the seeder to leecher ratio...and how much bandwidth they have. Sites like torrentbytes, scenetorrents, etc. cap the amount of users so they dont have 13,000 leechers making everything extremely slow.

cyberpunk243

07-12-2005 14:57:03

Yeah I tried to sign up for the one that you said but it said that they were at their max and so I would have to wait.

ajrock2000

07-12-2005 14:58:32

Yeah, if you are lucky, you will be able to access the signup page, because they prune inactive accounts, and cancel accounts whose share ratio is too low. I got into torrentbytes randomly one day I was able to signup. Scenetorrents has signups totally closed I think, which sucks..

Also.....its best to leave your ul and dl max's at the presets, you will generally download faster as you upload faster. If you restrict uploads you generally lose download speed.

I've never heard of that being true, but I only use Torrentbytes anyways. I can't max out my upload or my whole connection starts to go extremely slow. I keep it at 30k, and leave it seeding for 3 days or whatever. On Torrentbytes, I get 700k no matter what my upload speed is P

Why not? I found the page where SBC DSL tells me how to access newsgroups but it shows the way through Outlook only. Why wouldn't that be a good program to use?

agroman

08-12-2005 09:20:10

There are other programs that are better equipped to handle how people post binaries (one specifically that you will have problems with when using Outlook is yEnc).

Other newsreaders have features like PAR file support (which is a really nice feature to have when you are missing like 1 out of a 234987 file posting).

Outlook will probably work fine for reading news, but for downloading binaries it's not the best choice.

Wolfeman

No, I don't want to buy the music again... I already paid for them once. I want to dl the torrents or whatnot to replace my missing cds, most of which I had not uploaded roll At that time I was a computer noob and only imported like 1 or 2 tracks per cd.

Hey ajrock, I have been using the alt.binaries.nl search but every time I find a movie, I download it and it never downloads. They show up as only like 15mB and I know that can't be correct. http//alt.binaries.nl/search/?q=Virgin[]http//alt.binaries.nl/search/?q=Virgin Can you see if you can go there and download 40 yr old virgin? I can't. It will do some download thing in newsbin and then it will still say 0/15mB or whatever. I have already tried this on a few different movies. I also downloaded Bullet in a Bible where I actually got to download it but I got to 117.0Mb out of 118.0Mb and it stopped! I can't resume it or force it. Is there any way I can salvage what it did download?

ajrock2000

08-12-2005 14:09:50

Well if you use the new beta version of alt.binaries.nl, you can search for a specific thing, and select all the files you want, and choose "create nzb". It will queue all the files in nzb. Most releases come with around 49 15mb parts, which you will then have to compile using WinRAR (rarlabs.com).

Okay, let me get this straight. I went to the beta version and searched, Enron. I am looking for the documentary, "Enron The Smartest Guys in the Room." http//beta.binaries.nl/search.html?days=14&q=Enron&p=3[]http//beta.binaries.nl/search.html?days=14&q=Enron&p=3 That is the link where I found like CD 1 and then CD2. I clicked on the NZB next to the one that I wanted. Firefox asked me if I wanted to save it or open it. I click save and then open it on my desktop. It goes into my Newsbin software, the progress bar moves and then it just stays there after it looks like it did some pre-loading phase. After that it doesn't move again. It just says 0/14.8 MB [34]. Am I missing something because they all seem to be doing that. Can you download that movie? This is annoying me.

ajrock2000

08-12-2005 14:21:47

You have to check all the files you want. In your case, this dvd has 113 parts at 15mb/each. Odd, because usually dvd releases have 50mb parts, not 15. Anyways, you check the ones you want on the side, if you need all the parts from the page, choose select all, then choose "create nzb" on the top. Dont click the nzb button on the file. Open the created nzb file in newzbin, and it will queue the files. This all assumes you have a newsgroup server that you have access too...
