first of all, the article said that the estimated odds were 1 in 5500, so don't think that it has to happen. Anyways, it does not appear to be big enough (6 km or bigger) for an extinction level collision.

The only reason i can think of as to why firing a nuclear missle at the asteroid would start a nuclear war, would be because other countries might be jealous of the country who fired.

There's probably only a slightly higher chance of that happening than the asteroid hitting earth.

Also, a 6 KM wide asteroid would fuck the world up. Not only causing massive devastation, but knocking the earth off of its axis and plummeting the earth into fuck knows what kind of state.
