It's not only a Canadian holiday. It's a holiday celebrated all over the commonwealth (which includes the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, South Africa and many other African countries).

In the UK these days it is mainly known for sporting events taking place, but initially it was (in the UK) when people would go back to work the day after Christmas they would take boxes with them and their bosses would put money in them.

When I was young I used to think it was because they always had Boxing on Boxing Day and that's why it was named so.
