First Foot?

There's a custom in Scotland at Hogmanay (New Year) called first-footing, which basically involves the first person to walk though your door, or being the first person to walk through someone elses door after midnight.
They are supposed to take gifts like alcohol (Whisky) and food to give to the owner of the house to bring them good luck throughout the coming year.
I don't think we will have our first-footer till tomorrow afternoon, but nobody here knows about it anyway so no Whisky for me. cry
If you are going to be someone first-footer then take them something for good luck for the new year. Or try to get someone who will be your first-foot to bring you something. wink
Have any local customs where you live or are from?
Apparently we're supposed to eat 12 grapes, one for each month of the new year, and make a wish each time we make one. Each wish is granted every month. O

Well I first-footed tonight, it's a tradition in the north-east of England too, don't know about anywhere else.
That was six hours ago though, just got in so happy new year everyone!

Well, all of my family has been doing it for as long as I can remember. I was talking to a friend from Canada and she asked me if I was going to eat the grapes, so I guess it's not a Californian/Los Angeles/Mexican thing.

Where I'm from (South Louisiana) people cook cabbage and black-eyed peas for luck or something. It's really terrible b/c I don't eat cabbage or black-eye peas and for the whole day the house reeks of cabbage and nobody cooks anything else for the people who aren't interested in cabbage & black-eyed peas.

Sounds like me when apparently everyone else in the world loves seafood but me...not only do I have to smell the shit...I have to starve because no one thinks about the guy who doesn't eat seafood.

I'm Chinese, so my family celebrates the Lunar New Year sometime in Feb/March (its different every year). As for the Jan. 1st New Year, we don't really do much, maybe go out to dinner at a restaurant or something. Anyways, for Chinese New Year, some of the traditions are old people (parents, grandparents, etc) giving young kids what's called a "hoong bao", which translates into "red envelope". Inside the envelopes is a small amount of money. In exchange, the kids will have to say something along the lines of "good luck in the new year and have good health" in Chinese. Then there is dinner, which consists of plenty of different types of meats and vegetables (I can't remember exactly what).
As for the seafood issue, I eat a lot of seafood because I think Chinese people in general eat a lot of seafood. This probably results from the fact that Hong Kong (where my parents grew up) and a lot of the major cities in China are very close to a major body of water. Thus, seafood is readily available and is comparable in price to chicken, and less expensive than beef. Beef is actually significantly more expensive than seafood there.

I have a lot of customs for the holidays, I'm Ukrainian. Mainly just odd foods to eat and not eat.
