Well, the first issue went out, and all was great!

Okay, I'll explain I am the school newspaper editor. This past year I started coming up with this idea to start a newspaper at our school and had no idea what a response I would get. I started thinking about it when I was looking at all of my extracurricular activities and looking at the ones that I actually ENJOYED. It just seemed like a lot of the stuff that I did made me unhappy. So I changed that by dropping the stuff that made me less of a person. And now I am starting to figure out who I am and all of that mushy stuff.

Back to what's real I started the Newspaper expecting failure. I got a little abandoned dusty classroom to start as an office, which by myself I cleaned for 3 days after school (janitors refused roll ). I then talked up our technology adviser to get 5 Apple iBooks in the room and a high-powered iMac for editing, file-saving, etc. No one even knew what I was doing...

I then made the announcement, which at fast kind of scared me because I thought no one would join. To my amazement, we had 61 people, 30 guys and 31 girls at the first meeting. I was astonished, I didn't even know what to say. I then decided that 61 was a little large for a newspaper staff, so I made some cuts (it was sort of hard). The prompt was Write an article about something that really means a lot to you, and make us really think you will do a lot for The Light. We had 47 entries, and a friend and I looked through all of them, with each of us giving them point values over 10 [It took forever].

After making the selection, we now had our crew. And within 2 weeks, we had out our first issue, which was awesome! Out of a student body around 500 we sold 418 copies for $.50 (not only students buy them, some staff and other adults did at the school book store.)

I've been getting a ton of compliments about it, and I really am just so excited that everything came together...

Was anyone on here the editor of their newspaper to give me any tips or cool article ideas?

I'm the associate life editor for our school's paper. If you want, give me your school's address and your name and we can send you a copy of our paper every issue if you want some ideas. Our paper has won Pacemaker awards in the past and just won again this year (I don't know if you are familiar with what a Pacemaker is)

Good article ideas--let's see, sports is always good, I write a music review and food review with the life editor, we do stories on random drug testing (our school has it), important things going on around the school, an occassional student profile, etc. I don't know how "exciting" your school is, our school has about 2000 students, so there is usually something going on.

Make sure after you get over your first hiccups that you get the paper out at least once a week, anything less and it becomes kind of a joke. If you can find an artist a cartoon spread usually helps.

Do you print on newsprint?

Once a week for a high school paper is both expensive and unrealistic. We do 12 pages every other week, but due to costs we have cut back on how often we print.

Do you sell yours or give it out for free.

Students can purchase a subscription at registration for the year; I forget the exact cost.

We also charge like $15 for parents who want a copy mailed to them (that $15 covers the school year).

We had a newspaper class I believe and they may have made some newspapers but I never saw one that I can remeber though.
