seeing as I've had my 42" samsung dlp hdtv for about 1-1 1/2 months now, my surround sound system setup for about 1 month, and all the expensive monster cables for the rig; its time for a PVR. I currently have Windows Media Center 2005 hooked up to my hdtv using an s-video cable.. its time to start a new system dedicated entirely on myth.

suggestions for parts are appreciated (case, psu, fan, mobo, liquid cooling system, ram, cpu, hdd, video card or sound card)

i already have an hdtv capture card in mind

pcHDTV3000 (it supports 8VSM, QAM64 and QAM256 cable transmission. On average you can get 70% of the cable feed's available signal. Picks up DTV signals. can be hooked up to a satellite/cable set top box for signal. [b19aff090bd]$169.98[/b19aff090bd])

Did you watch the video on systm.org? They go through the setup up for a mythtv box.

I wouldn't spend time building part by part. Just try to get a good deal on something already made (liquid cooling is ridiculous imo) and keep it simple, you don't need crazy performance. Just get a decent video card that does component out and/or DVI assuming you have those inputs on your TV, and a sound card that has optical out that is linux compatible (I suggest the chaintech AV710). That's it.

I know how to build one. I'm just asking for suggestions on what [b7649a58d7e]YOU[/b7649a58d7e] would put in your MythTV box.

are you looking to go micro-atx or regular?

I would go for cost efficiency. Get a good amount of reasonably fast hard disk space, 1gb ram and I'd probably opt for an older P4, like 2.5GHz or so. Definitely don't need to get liquid cooling. And monster cables are the bose of cabling. Sorry to hear you bought the hype and let the store sell you something marked up 3000%...

I only bought the cables because they were $20-30 + tax on Employee Discount.. and these were $150 cables.

Otherwise I would have simply bought Acoustic Research.

you can opt for a passive liquid cooling system if silence is a big issue. i think i saw a review on one on guru3d or something. if you are going for microatx then you are going to have to opt for one 400 rather than 2 200s (if you need that much space). a gig of ram is a must these days.

You can't make an HDTV DVR rig, 'cost effecient'.

What type of MicroATX cases do you like?

most people building htpc's opt for a horizontal silverstone case.

What reasons did you choose Myth over WinMCE?

Why not?

BTW in my previous post I didn't say you didn't know how to build a PC so no need to get defensive lol.

i am not a fan of MCE. i just use TheaterTek, Media Player Classic, or PowerDVD if i am going to play a video file.

1) MCE has a lot of restrictions. and is using a proprietary format to record.

2) TiVo automatically deletes your recordings after 1-2 weeks of recording.

3) MythTV is customizable from the ground up and is open source.

theres many more reasons.. check out mythtv.org
