I've used winamp 5 for a while now, I've liked it but want to try something else as it's been giving me problems lately. Keeps locking up and has been annoying overall

So is there some new leader that I haven't heard about yet?

Some winamp features I would like to still have
ability to skin and use plug-ins
winamp's handling of the media library is nice

want it to be stable and have as low overhead.

I don't want to use Windoes MP, and definately am not installing real

So, what do you guys use? Anyone else having problems with winamp?
Any good open source players?

just installed foobar, seems to be a lot of what I was looking for. I hope more people get involved with this project to dress it up more. I'm gonna try it for a few days to see what I think.

I just started it, but it doesn't seem to incorporate a media library which will be a dealbreaker. I need something that can scan my music folder and remember the location of the songs. I'm probally missing it.

and speaking of media and OSX, i haven't totally delved into the mac thing yet as my new iBook is the first mac i've used since elementary school.

I tried looking for codecs for OSX, but was very suprised at the lack of them. I can't play any of my downloaded .aviurl==http://=http:///url on my iBook. I managed to find the divx codec.

Seems like there would be a nice pack of codecs, since there are so many people doing win codec packs.

i got rhapsody that i've had for about a year now and of course WMP...i'll be getting iTunes when i get my iPod.

most of the time i just use WMP. I'll only use the iTunes to sync my music to my iPod. and in case anyone's wondering, Rhapsody sucks. its actually nicer to lisen to music than WMP...but that's about it and i'd never actually keep it if I didn't have a free subscription. lol

man this foobar is exciting, you have to put effort into learning how to customize it, but you can do anything you want!

here's my foobar
http/" alt=""/img54.imageshack.us/img="54/7084/foobar3vr.png[" alt=""/img87b6648c23]

sorry for the size.

anyway, its pretty barebones, which is how I like it. there's a lot of power in that right-click menu... tagging entire albums from cddb data in one click is nice. the album art script is sweet, too. just select a track from an album, click once and bammo, you have a 500x500 folder.jpg from walmart.com saved.

also sexy is the toast - here's what that looks like
[img="87b6648c23]http/" alt=""/img54.imageshack.us/img="54/2081/foobartoast3bh.png[" alt=""/img87b6648c23]
all the pertinent info about a song in a quick, semitransparent, unobtrusive box. doesn't show up if i'm running anything fullscreen (i.e. cs).

as for other media, i use the windows mplayer port. no directshow bullshit, almost every codec you could ever want comes with it, the rest are in an addon pack. it loads and seeks xvid/divx faster than anything i've ever seen, uses the least memory of any player i've tested, and plays unplayable files and files from heavily scratched cds. best of all, it's open source.

It would be the THE best if the damned developers didn't quash underground attempts to incorporate Real codecs etc. (

audio or video? i think it plays m4a out of the box, and maybe m4p with a plugin. no matter what you want it to do, there is a plugin for it. there's just an incredible amount of work behind foobar...

i mean m4a yea.. P but uh, yea all my files were downloaded off allofmp3 in m4a format...

btw.. allofmp3 has a 14% discount till feb14th, and then if you use XRost you get another 10%, so freaking i stuck in $15 and i came out with almost $20 -D

Get Mplayer I copied the binary into my $PATH. I love it because I can screen it and control it remotely with my laptop.

mplayer --ontop file.avi

Plays about anything.

i have been testing out a lot of media players

winamp is good

itunes i dont liek very much because when u add a song to a playlist it is added to your library again. and u cant delete it without removing from librarry

musicmatch is one of my favorites because it autoupdates when you relocate a song so u dont ahve to readd it. and it also adds music automaticly to your library. and the repair broken links (if u delete songs) button is very helpfull.

I use Winamp with the MMD3 Skin and mlPod plugin for ipod support. I love how winamp handles my library and playlist. But i don't like how slow it can be sometimes. And album art would be great. All the plugin's i tried for art sucked. But i think Winamp is still better than anything else.

VLC is da bomb. it's kinda dying as I understand it from a development standpoint, but for now it's still the best all around player.
