price range im willing to pay is anything under 100$ realy i see them on sale all the time for like 20$.

thanks in advance

and is it worth it to get a double layer DVD burner or will a single layer one work jsut fine.

I have 2 of these NEC dual layer drives. They are priced very cheap and work great for me. They have great reviews for them too. I would not buy a single layer drive now. Dual layer is too cheap and nice to have. The only thing i would contimplate is the lightscribe models. But probably wait about 6 months for those to drop to under $40 for a good one.

I agree, go with the NEC drives (ND-35x0). Not only are they good, they last a while too. I burn about 5-6 a day and they've been good to me.

What's hack do?

hehehhehe

You can hack drives so they'll do bitsetting (set DVD+R to DVD-ROM which helps compatibility with some drives), get rid of region lock, get rid of rip-lock, and burn some media faster than they were originally intended. I hacked my older NEC drive but didn't really have to hack my ND-3540.

Not trying to insult your intellegence, but you couldn't do that w/o installing a different laser.

I bought a Lite-On DVD/CD burner from Newegg w/ Xmas $. Here's the one I bought LITE-ON Black ATAPI/E-IDE DVD Burner Model SHM-160P6S - Retail
There's no link cause I just found out that this item's deactivated on Newegg, but you might be able to find it on eBay or Google. This DVD burner burns [b29d0456425]any[/b29d0456425] type of DVD out there. I've burned a couple DVDs already and it probably did it under 15min.

Also, I opted [i29d0456425]not[/i29d0456425] to get a Lightscribe because the technology is still in its infancy (it can only burn B&W), plus you have to buy special DVDs/CDs in order to print labels.

Go with BenQ.

They are one of the top brands, and their OEM drives (equal to their retail models) are often sold dirt cheap by companies like I/O Magic etc.
