DVI. Is it really needed?

I'm getting an LCD Monitor and I have a few to choose from, some with and some without DVI.
Is it really an essential and what's the main reason for getting a monitor with it? I'll only use it for computer use but will play some high end games and watch movies on it also.

DVI looks nicer than vga but its not essential.

Well the choice is between a 19" Widescreen without DVI or a 19" non-widescreen with DVI. shrug

but only important if your video card supports it.
Some folks say you can't notice the difference for normal web-browsing. You would notice the difference in games and designing though.

I can notice the difference in 2D, I had two of the same LCDs, one using the DVI input and one with VGA. DVI was much clearer and so I ended up getting a dual DVI vid card.

I doubt TSJ is going to have that "problem."

Thing is, I hardly ever do dual screen anymore. I watch TV on the second screen.
I would still recommend DVI though, it's just clearer.

well almost any lcd monitor of decent quality has dvi. my viewsonice vx724 shows almost no difference between dvi and vga though so i don't see what the big deal is. might as well have it anyways, right?

What is the price difference? If it's only about 100 dollars of a difference, then definitely go for the dvi. Also, it depends on what you are using it for. Since you are in to photography, I would definitely say go with the DVI. Sure wish I would have.

get the one without DVI, widescreen is the way to go!
DVI isn't necessary, as VGA is clear enough as it is. you will see a difference between the two, but if it's DVI VS 169 aspect ratio... it's really no contest

Widescreen is smaller then the full screen version. If you want a widescreen monitor get the GDM-FW900. The best monitor out right now and it only costs like 300$ on ebay used with shipping.
DVI is digital and better then VGA. Espically with LCD's where it is digital and has to convert the analog VGA signal to a digitial signal and it looses quality that way.

Yeah, why go with a 19 inch widescreen unless you're going to watch movies often on the small screen. Otherwise, go with a regular screen for more screen area.

The GDM is better then that and it is half the price ;).

amazon says that the GDM is $1000...
EDIT tounge-bitten, nevermind
EDIT2 tounge-unbitten
the gateway that i posted is still better because it provides a true 169 aspect ratio, is LCD, and uses DCDi (google it), has 4 USB hubs, has DVI and S video and compostie (for HDTV) and VGA, has picture in picture, and can rotate 90 degrees for portrait page viewing.
