heres some more stuff i found Thinksecret chimes in today with a rumor about something I've been thinking about for awhile now What's next for the iPod Video? Specifically, they claim to have confirmation that Apple is wrapping up development on a video-enabled iPod with a 3.5" touch-enabled color screen. One of the problems with a device with a 3.5" screen is, where do you put the controls. Apple's solution, if this rumor is true, is to put the controls on the screen itself. This rumor is in alignment with recent Apple patent filings for using gestures on a touch-screen.
If this is true, I'll buy this device without reservation. Like many, I've been waiting for an Apple PDA of some sort for years and a device like this might finally come close to what I'd expect Apple to release. Apple doesn't need to buy Palm, they just need to keep expanding the iPod as a device to tie together the different parts of our computing experience. An iPod video "tablet" would fit that bill nicely.
While I personally believe that Apple is definitely working on an upgrade to its video iPod and that this is likely the form factor, I don't believe it will ship in "late March or early April" as ThinkSecret suggests. That pic from MacShrine looks legit. Here's some info
Assuming the 5g iPod screen stretched from end to end it would be
2" by 3.75" exactly. Diagonally, that is ~4.25"
Using a ruler to measure the MacShrine picture, the dimensions are
1.75" by 3.00". Diagonally, that is ~3.5", which according to
thinksecret[=http//www.thinksecret.com/news/0602videoipod.html]thinksecret is the exact size of the screen on the forthcoming video iPod.
Now let's do some supposition
Assume that the Video Ipod will have the same height dimension as the 5g iPod. Using the measurements from the MacShrine picture, that converts up to
2.00" by ~3.42". Diagonally, that is ~4.00". Again, this is a supposition and goes against the leaked info.
Either way, the new video iPod is going to be smaller than the previous models we're used to -OR- the leaked info is wrong, the dimensions will be the same, and the screen will end up being 4.25" diagonally.

people will buy it because they love ipods, they will notice apple makes good software since it seems to be more of a tablet PC than an ipod. than will go out and buy macbookpro or ibook or mac mini. this is the middle peice between getting users from windows to apple using ipods which they have almost total market controll

It's gonna be hell to develop a case for that. They'd have to design some kind of screen protector film that would allow the iPod to detect your touch, yet not bubble up when applied, and even with that, the screen is so exposed to damage unlike hard non-touch screens.

i was going to say the same thing, theyre going 2 need 2 stop making ipods out of such easy-to-scratch material.
