Doctor Who

Someone else asked about my sig, so a thread is born...
Doctor Who, in case you didn't know, was/is the longest running sci-fi series on TV. Put simply, it's about this kooky guy who travels through time and space, saving people from alien invasions, and stuff like that. D
It was off TV since 1989, except for a movie, but is now back in force. If you like sci-fi, or british stuff, you'll like this.
The new series has already been shown in the UK, and you can grab all the current episodes off P2P, but it'll premiere on the Sci-Fi channel on March 17th for all you bandwidth challenged people.

DW is all about everything. The future, the past, other dimensions, [iaa1af90a53]anything[/iaa1af90a53]. It's the only show in which anything can happen on a regular basis. You can't say that about any other sci-fi series.

While that can be a good thing, it is ultimately a convenience for the writers. I find it interesting that the sci-fi shows that originated in the 60s all have things built into the story that overcome the lack of technology and budget of those times. Like transporters for Star Trek so they wouldn't have to create the effect of the ship landing on a planet. The same is true here, the TARDIS just disappearing when it leaves and kisy being a second hand police box. It being written in that it used to change shape, but is stuck now. Even how the Doctor could regenerate is just a way to cover the fact that they had to change actors. That has to be the most convenient plot device I have ever seen in Sci-fi.
We take them for granted as deep parts of the canon, but it was all a way to save money back in the 60s. Even now, 40 years after it debuted, we still think those same things are not only non-hokey, but exciting.
Nothing wrong with it, I just think the history of sci-fi is interesting.

[quote173e3d3472="PsychoAU"]While that can be a good thing, it is ultimately a convenience for the writers.[/quote173e3d3472]
Perhaps for the writers, in that an alien presence can be added to historical events, but certainly not for the production staff. A series set in present time is far cheaper.
[quote173e3d3472="PsychoAU"]I find it interesting that the sci-fi shows that originated in the 60s all have things built into the story that overcome the lack of technology and budget of those times.[/quote173e3d3472]
You really can't compare DW to those other shows on that basis, due to the fact that in DW science fiction was a means to an end. You may not realize this, but Doctor Who was originally a childrens program with a mandate to educate children about history via the mode of entertainment. Once things like the Daleks were introduced, money and ratings became more important to the powers than be, and despite the childrens program label, the show evolved into a sci-fi drama intended for the entire family.
[quote173e3d3472="PsychoAU"]Like transporters for Star Trek so they wouldn't have to create the effect of the ship landing on a planet.[/quote173e3d3472]
Actually, while the Enterprise didn't land, they did do shuttlecraft landings, which undermines that argument a bit.
[quote173e3d3472="PsychoAU"]The same is true here, the TARDIS just disappearing when it leaves and kisy being a second hand police box. It being written in that it used to change shape, but is stuck now.[/quote173e3d3472]
I could grant you that, as it's easier than repeatedly having to use a different prop for the Doc and pals to exit in every story, but seeing a modern police box on an alien world roots the viewer in reality. I'm sure that was intended from the beginning, not just as a reason to save money.
[quote173e3d3472="PsychoAU"]Even how the Doctor could regenerate is just a way to cover the fact that they had to change actors. That has to be the most convenient plot device I have ever seen in Sci-fi.[/quote173e3d3472]
Ditto. )
They were damned lucky people accepted Pat Troughton, and that it became an accepted plot device. They really had no choice, but they were still damned lucky. That's why the companion must not change from regeneration to regeneration, but only during their run. Less risk of rejection.
[quote173e3d3472="PsychoAU"]We take them for granted as deep parts of the [b173e3d3472]canon[/b173e3d3472], but it was all a way to save money back in the 60s. Even now, 40 years after it debuted, we still think those same things are not only non-hokey, but exciting.

I once read how Roddenberry said that he came up with the idea for transporters because they could not create the effect of the entire ship landing on the planet. I don't think the use of shuttles was there from the beginning. Eventually that was possible because of new techniques or what not, but I know it was an after thought to the original problem.
I know that Doctor Who was originally a kids program. Which reiterates the idea of the convenience. Because it was just a kids show, they didn't have to rely on how realistic the concepts were. Just like with kids shows now, you can visit the dinosaurs or end up in the middle of an erupting volcano, etc. It is just a convenient way to get the lessons of history or geology across. Hell, how many educational shows have shrunk someone down to travel inside the human body? it is all acceptable as part of those show just as the ever changing environments are acceptable to Doctor Who.
I think every single Star Trek series has episodes where they end up in the 19th or 20th centuries. Doctor Who was probably an inspiration to that element. Which just shows how influencial this kids show from the UK is to the history of modern sci-fi.
Yeah, I think they got lucky that the audience didn't reject the entire idea of this show. Better ideas have bombed worse before. )

Absolutely. Just as the Borg was likely "inspired" by the Cybermen. However, those other series can't get away with it on a regular basis without serious loss of credibility. (Which has happened on occassion anyhow)
Doctor Who is unique in that [b8211b9b04b]any[/b8211b9b04b] event or story that can take place in any other medium, can happen in DW. The opposite can never be true. That fact makes DW the best premise for a sci-fi series ever.
There's nothing it can't do. )

New Dr Who will blow you away. mrgreen
I smile when I think of new fans going back and watching the old stuff, and saying "What the fuck is this???" It's a big difference.
To the n00bs Don't ignore the old stuff. If you like other old sci-fi, like Twilight Zone, you'll enjoy the stuff from the 60's, and it gets progressively better over the decades. When you're not riveted by the good episodes, you'll be laughing at the not so good ones. ;)

I'm trying not to read anything you guys are saying (spoilers) but should I just go ahead and watch the episode you are talking about? Is it the doomsday one? I haven't had the time at all to catch any other episodes yet.
Tholek
14-07-2006 14:53:19
Yeah, it's Doomsday we're talking about. (However, it's part 2 of Army Of Ghosts, so you have to watch that first at least)
In my opinion, Army/Doomsday is sort of the cream of the crop of the new series. So, I'd sooner recommend you at least watch the first episode "Rose" of season one to at least get an intro to the series first. I really recommend you watch it all in order though. )
If you watch this, it will rock, but you may appreciate it more by building up to it first.
Incidentally, there's a season 1 torrent available, and a season 2 torrent will probably popup soon too. (Next episode won't be til xmas)
hehehhehe
14-07-2006 16:02:42
Ok, thanks man. I'll probably watch it in order then. I got season 1 a little while ago with your link and I have season 2 so far. I'll have to wait until next month to watch it though.
Wolfeman

Watch season 1 and 2 of the new series in order. They won't make sense otherwise. Its a great show, you won't be disappointed...
hehehhehe
27-07-2006 11:05:20
Ok, I watched up to and including Satan's Pit. I liked the first doctor much more than the first. He was the reason I gave it a chance in the first place. He's a much more intense actor and thought the chemistry between him and Rose was more interesting.
Now in the second series it's like they're both too chummy chummy and joking around all the time. I want to punch D. Tennant whenever I want to see that small little weak jaw of his. He seems to spit all over the place when he acts mad and I just can't buy it. It's too bad C. Eccleston didn't stay on, I would've liked the show much much more. I'll watch until the end of the series and maybe the xmas episode at the end of the year.

twisted
I just don't think that they are the same caliber of actors (well, they aren't as can be seen in their past work). For example, when the Dalek showed up in the first series, I can understand a whole lot of what was going on in the whole series just by how terrified and mad CE's Dr. Who was played. When it was DT and the cybermen, I didn't get the drama at all. However, I can understand if people like DT because they find him enthusiastic and funny.
The show gets good actors, like the guy who played Charles Dickens and the cleavage woman from girl in the mirror.
I'll probably watch series three though if the last shows of series two are good.
Tholek
28-07-2006 05:12:14
Yeah, as sthe series gets more popular, bigger (UK) actors will appear. That's what happened with the old series. There was a time that actors were trying to get on the show to impress their kids, rather than casting directors trying to find them. )
When that motion picture project comes together (Something RTD wants nothing to do with) DW should be even bigger.

That really sums it up.
That was the most over the top episode of DW I've ever seen, even for Russel T Davies. (Which is saying something)
[spoilerc6390992ed]Even as a yank, I groaned as the TARDIS became part of a car chase. In case you were wondering....NO, the TARDIS hasn't done that before. It almost seemed sacrilegious to see it do that. (Yeah, it can do anything, but I think we'd have seen it fly like that in the past 40 years)
If it weren't for the great prosthetics/animatronics of the Empress, (The ship being destroyed looked good too, although the lightning it gave off didn't) I'd [ic6390992ed]really[/ic6390992ed] go on a tirade. I don't even want to see how people on OG responded. I just can't imagine die hard whovians accepting this as the status quo.
Yeah, it's a Christmas special, and I can give a little leeway for stuff like the snow, but this almost came off as a parody. "The Curse Of Fatal Death" came to mind on more than one occassion. (Get that, if you haven't already. It's good)[/spoilerc6390992ed]
I'd be less harsh if it weren't DW (It [ic6390992ed]was[/ic6390992ed] fun), but it is. I've learned to accept the new series, and love it, but RTD is pushing it now... ?

I just watched the first ep of Rose again on PBS. They added the cut down version of "Confidential" to make up the 15 minutes which I'm watching now.
Even though I can download the newest eps, it's really nice to have it back on normal TV. Feels like I'm a kid again.

Christina Cole (Hex) is really good in this weeks ep. The whole thing had a very 7th Dr feel to it. This series is really starting off well.
I loved the Doctor Who series when Rose was the sidekick.. Haven't seen the episodes with the black girl yet. But I hear they won't be offering the show in high def (

I laughed the first time I saw that years ago (late 80s). Doctor Who really tried to tie themselves in with kids and teens. I guess an analog would be Robbie Williams today. (Spice Girls gone past their prime now) ;)
The Hartnell years are so different from what we're watching now, but equally as good, if not better sometimes. If you really love the current series, you ought to try watching the old.

I had a LOT of misgivings about adapting this, yet alone [i1249496c08]any[/i1249496c08] of the New Adventure novels. (The series that preceded the current ones published by the BBC) However, this was so true to the book, current cast permitting, that I was stunned. It had the feel and even look of a 7th Dr. story, and I mean in a good way, not that it lacked a budget. ;)
Again, this really is one of those milestone episodes you can show to friends to get them hooked. It stands so well on its own. The casting was fantastic (That Harry Lloyd is another Hugh Laurie in the making), and the effects were great despite it not being an effects driven episode. [spoiler1249496c08](Cloaked ship was very well done)[/spoiler1249496c08]
[spoiler1249496c08]Also, DW fans will finally notice some links to the past in this one. Within the series, [i1249496c08]and[/i1249496c08] without. ("Sydney & Verity" = tongue in cheek reference to DW creator, and original producer)[/spoiler1249496c08]

It was a tearjerker at many a point, but the bit at the end almost seemed like the kid was gonna grow up to be The Brigadier or something. (For a second, anyhow ;) ) The kid who played Tim was even better this week. He and Harry Lloyd have a future in acting, for sure. Special effects were superb again as well. You could tell the ship explosion and town attack cost money. They really pulled out the stops on this one.[/spoiler1b598c8fa4]

Damn torrent....c'mon already.
Tholek
18-06-2007 09:50:35
Wow, well they did it...
[spoiler35969fd064]Cub, looking back at your earlier post, I take it that you didn't know who the Master was? He's essentially the Moriarty to The Doc. While the Daleks have been called his greatest enemy, The Master is his actual nemesis. A fellow Timelord (fellow student in college as well along with The Rani, if you take novels into consideration) that turned to evil.
When I first heard that Jacobi was to guest star, I had hoped he was to play a future, or past (recast) incarnation of The Doc, or maybe even his old mentor who last appeared during the Pertwee era. That, even though a precedent had been set where he played an avatar of The Master in an animated version of DW that preceded the current series.
The reason I kept believing that almost up to that look on his face as he became himself again, was that when we last saw The Master, he had passed his last regeneration by some time, and had been disembodied and surviving by possessing others. He was then "killed" (again) by being consumed by the heart of the TARDIS in the telefilm. His consciousness would obviously have to trapped within. Now Rose opens this to save the 9th Doctor, but IIRC we don't see any evidence of The Master escaping there. Even if he did, he's disembodied. As we can see here, Jacobi regenerates, so he is clearly a biological Timelord. I haven't perused the forums on Outpost Gallifrey for opinions on this, but I will later. I just don't how they explain that. (How'd he get out? He posessed some other Timelord? Who? When?)
Perhaps they are factoring in the novels for an explanation but I doubt it.
When Chantho shot him it really bummed me out that Jacobi had to go, though. Almost as bad as when McCoy got shot. (Nice homage to the telefilm, there)
Jacobi would have made, and [i35969fd064]did[/i35969fd064] make, a great Master again. In fact, just how good he was is enhanced by how bad Simm is. Yes, I don't care for a quickwitted jovial Master. Even in the past where The Doc has been eccentric and funny, the coldness and evil of The Master has been the perfect counterpoint. Simm, from what we see here, and in the coming attractions, is too flippant. Yeah, I'll give him time, but I don't see it working too well.
Now, Roger Delgado, the original actor to play him in the 60's, was brilliant, and Anthony Ainley who took over the role for many years, was excellent as well. Both played an intelligent and worthy foe, yet one whose character did not change as wildly as that of the often recast Doctor. That makes this "Young" Master more difficult to swallow. It's such a shame they wasted Anthony Stewart Head so early on. He seemed so much better. (
I liked Cpt. Jack, though. He's back to his old DW self. I don't care for Torchwood, and actually prefer a multi-membered TARDIS crew, although that probably won't last.
In the end this ep is just a setup for their ultimate confrontation, but I love it for Jacobi's performance. Within that 45 minutes we get to see what The Master was like, or could've been before going bad. A stellar performance. )[/spoiler35969fd064]

I've only seen a few of the past episodes. Torrents are my friend though and I'm starting to catch up. The B/W recreations with the stills are hard to watch though, so I'm skipping to the 70s when the full episodes are there.
And you're right, I didn't know.
Tholek
19-06-2007 19:53:52
Much of the 60s stuff is complete. I wouldn't gloss over it so quickly.
Still, I hate to say it, but those restored ones throw me too. There's not a lot that can be done though. Tragically, the BBC just destroyed some of the old stuff, and the likelihood is that most of it can never be recovered. I can't blame the BBC for trying to recreate it as best as possible.
I still love the Hartnell era. If you watch Jacobi in Utopia, you get a feel for that Hartnell/Troughton era of DW. He wasn't the cute weird guy the girls fall for, he was the mysterious kindly grandfather type. That allowed for the younger male companions to score with the ladies. (Not that we get to see much of that, though) ;)
I can't help but like that Doctor better. Decades went by with him shown as too alien and advanced to even consider hooking up with some human girl. Even when he was played by a younger actor. Sure, the chicks would dig him sometimes, but you knew it could go nowhere. That's one of the reasons the 96' telefilm had some of its negative reaction with the 9th Dr kissing that girl. Now with a young guy, and in the current climate, I'm not too surprised they're trying to change that, but he could never end up with one of these girls. Not as himself, anyhow. (Human Nature)
The Pertwee era is where they really started to make the Doc a sex symbol. Start with "Spearhead From Space" onward if you really can't watch the earlier stuff. He wasn't as young as later Docs, but he was damned spry, and was the first Doc that at least Mums wanted to bed. p
Tom Baker...well, most popular Doc of the classic series. Can't say anything against him for fear of being lynched at a convention.
Davison played too indecisive a Doc, and Colin Baker was too unsympathetic. McCoy was a slight return to the more diminutive type like Troughton, but he played the most manipulative Doc yet, and the one who was about to divulge who he really was all this time. Of course they canceled the series before we learned who that was. roll
McGann was a great 8th Dr, but the film was ruined by Eric Roberts as The Master (not kidding, I wish I was). I always felt McGann should've been recast in the new series instead of Eccleston, but no dice.
There's also two feature films starring Peter Cushing that retread some Hartnell stories, but aren't "canon" as they say, just fun to watch.
Lots of good stuff to watch. Just be forgiving of some of the special effects. ;)

I'm not as pleased as last week, and then again...
[spoiler4d948a2fb9]It's Simm. I can't stand his Master. Too comedic. At least for me, having seen the previous incarnations. New viewers may more readily accept him, but I think even Jacobi's performance showed how radically different the new personality is. Post-watch Yana, The Master was as he had always been. Murderous, and sinister, with maybe the odd witticism.
It was the [i4d948a2fb9]Doctor[/i4d948a2fb9] who was truly eccentric, facetious and flippant. That was as endearing child-like quality to his good nature. Taking that, and just laying it over The Master doesn't work for me. It just takes away from his power. So far he's a disappointment for me.
Perhaps RTD will regenerate him sometime soon. Traditionally The Master goes through lives like a baby through diapers. ;)
On the good side, we get to learn The Master was intentionally resurrected by The Timelords, and we get to see the Citadel in all its CGI goodness. Next week is the last ep, and according to that link above, we may get more Timelords than we can shake a stick at.[/spoiler4d948a2fb9]
