a friend told me that metallica's black album still sells about 1 million copies a year, thats amazing..not to mention nirvana and guns and roses. LEGENDSSSSSSS

just amazes me how the pop industry has taken over rock since y2k and yet no masterpiece has been made yet for this decade, and we're already 6 years into it!

its weird how everyone hates arrogant pricks such as kanye west for the things he does. Back in the 90s, guns and roses would just walk out and would be loved by all..times have changed. maybe this decade, coldplay will be remembered. Where 90s was nirvana etc, 80s metallica etc.

i don't know where i'm trying to get at here

Not really, that's pretty general a term for a band like tool. The best term I've heard for it is psychedelic rock. I've also heard math metal, prog metal, and straight prog rock.

Wolfeman

i've always considered tool progressive rock.

if you want to say progressive metal than fine, if you want to say hard rock then ok thats very general though.

and while I can see certain elements of psychodelic rock in their music, they are certainly not psychodelic rock,

they are just the most psychodelic band you know

Regardless of whether you hate Eminem or not, he is a lyrical mastermind. He's genius when it comes to wordplay; he will be remembered for tens of years.

Any underground rapper who gets successful becomes popular. Thus "pop rap". So let me get this correct, you could like someone while they are underground but once they become mainstream you dont like them anymore?

So yeah, rappers can't keep it real if they make the bling bling... ) Then again, that is what the entire rap industry is made of. Let all those snot-nosed kids think they have a shot at the Escalade. I think that rap is one of the most genious marketing schemes in the last 30 years.

Wow, that's quite a statement. I'm assuming you only/have only listened to Rap/Hip Hop music then. I would say Eminem is a clever lyricist but he is by no means "the greatest who ever lived".

You heard of Lennon, McCartney, Dylan, Jagger, Richards, Bacharach, Wilson, Townshend, Mercury, Morrison, Bowie, Morrisey, Clapton, Reading, Yorke, Cash or Strummer?

Do a search for some of the greatest songwriters of all time, chances are you'd find every single one of those in nearly every "Top 100" list, and Eminem and TuPac in (probably) none.

Yeah, they were all Nirvana derived... that is until around 1997 when we had the likes of Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, and Hanson... And I know even you can't say that is Nirvana derived.

Nirvana started grunge rock. The music these last few years and right now have been terrible. I mean anyone can make 'super hits' now. Have you guys heard of Hedley? THEY are derived from simple plan. P!ATD, derived from Fall out boy.

You can't leave out the punk writers either regardless if you like punk or not.

Lydon, Strummer, Cris, Matlock, Milo, Armstrong, Ness, Waits, Iggy,
knox, Robert Smith...And so many more. Why'll you may not have heard of them and there music might not be all over MTV, They posses lyrical skills that are out down by very few.

There's not a single band, act or artist that you've heard on MTV who doesn't sound like, or remotely sound like Nirvana?

justinag06

07-03-2006 00:58:10

im gonna go off on a rant in regards to this entire thread

you say every band is influenced by nirvana because you watched all those stupid fucking MTV Top Videos of all time countdowns, or read some list from rolling stone. Or bought a puddle of mudd CD.

maybe 5 years ago you could say this, but most of the bands you hear today are influeneced by artists from the late 80's, and early 90's that never got any attention because everyone was running around screaming about nirvana.

Nirvanas influence is rarely heard in the music I listen to today. While I still respect them, Cobain was not the musical visonairy he was painted to be, nevermind was a good album, but it wasn't prophetic. It was just fresh, catchy as hell, and then oh he died so its the biggest album ever.

trust me your musical tastes will all mature when you get to college.

I used to think there would never be a time when I wouldn't be listening to green day and nirvana, and hoobastank and metallica, and weezez, and incubus, and all that shit.

but low and behold 6 years later, I never once bother to go back and listen to that shit.

So all you teenagers wait a bit, if you really like music so much you'll enjoy it much more once you grow up and experience new things.

akalic

07-03-2006 19:37:05

nirvana was just an example, not 100% of the influences. Its just a friend was talking to me about them the other day so i thought i'd bring them to the table to talk about.

And obviously there are bands that sound like nirvana, but they are derived from them..
