Best image editor on a Mac?

I'm on an iBook right now (school-rented for film academy), I have it like every weekend now pretty much for senior project. I'm looking for an image editing program like Photoshop for this thing that's cheap/free.

Now I recall reading about a "freeware image editor" that rivaled Photoshop or something like that, but I forgot what it was called. Any help?
