Fonts

I have over 5,500 fonts on my computer, but putting them into my font folder in windows, it slows my computer down horribly. How can I keep the fonts out of windows font folder, but use them easily enough for graphic design?

thumb drive? more memory?

I know there's a program specifically for that, but I can't remember what it was called.
