I signed up for voip.com for an offer and they sent me an e-mail with the following

"
We appreciate your recent order with voip.com. Right now, phone numbers in the area you requested are on backorder. It generally takes between 15–20 days to get one. If you don't want to wait, you can choose a different area. We'll be happy to check on number availability for you.

Once your activation kit has shipped, your account will be set up and you can request transfer of an existing number. We recommend that you either choose another area, or ask us to assign a number near the area you chose, so we can ship your order and you can begin the transfer process.

Please log into your account at https//www.voip.com/login.aspx and click on the Support link located in the top right hand corner under your account number. Once there, you can submit a support ticket with your decision and we will respond with a confirmation email"

Now I don't really know much about voip at all.
Can anyone fill me in on what they are asking me?
I guess numbers in my area are on backorder obviously.. and that I can choose another area. But how would I choose another area.. if it's not my area? Would it cost more to choose in another area. I don't really get that.

And whats this about assigning me a number...
Am I getting a new phone number with this.. do i need another phone or hows it going to work with my existing phone line?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can choose any area you want...you'll just have that area code.

i use vonage and i kept my same phone number and same phones. you probably will want to disconnect the wiring coming into the house from your telco to avoid possibly damaging you voip equipment. not sure what voip.com does though...
