well more Ps3 news

Kutaragi showed trailers for previously announced titles including Ridge Racer 7, and announced plans to allow users to play emulated PSone and PlayStation 2 games directly over the Internet - initially offering games that place a relatively small burden on the network, but expanding the offering as technology progresses.

The console's online service will also offer [Sega] Mega Drive [Genesis] and PC Engine [Turbo Grafx 16] titles, he said - a line-up for which will be decided in conjunction with the specific games' respective publishers.

Users will also be able to exchange data and videos, and Kutaragi revealed that PlayStation 3 will offer something called the Global Mapping System (GMS), which will allow users to upload photographs and data about their surroundings, creating a detailed view of the world around them.

2.Yesterday I went over to a Development Studio and got to see actual PS3 TEST Kits in action (Until now, all I've seen are the 3 foot bulky dev stations that look like Beta Max videotape players). It was so shiny and sleek (just like Darth Vader's Helmet). Low and behold the power supply was internal with minimal heat to the unit and no fan noises! (I'm not joking, the thing was freaking mute). Ah, I haven't wanted to dry hump an inanimate object for several years (don't ask, I'm not telling), but that PS3 Test unit was damn sexy.

note there are times when my 360 woke me up because for some reason the power was still on? and its loud as hell

Right after delivering a keynote address that can best be described as uneventful, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Ken Kutaragi was interviewed by a well-known Japanese reporter and let drop two new details that Kutaragi called "secrets."

First the basic PlayStation 3 will retail for under ¥50,000 in Japan, 5% consumption tax included. Kutaragi quoted a price of ¥49,800 for the console [down from ¥62,790]. The announcement met with more enthusiastic applause from the audience than anything said or shown during the keynote in the hour prior. Does this indicate that the PS3 may be up for a price reduction in the United States?
[Update gamasutra.com suggests this price drop will be for Japan only]

Second In answer to a question about HD capability, Kutaragi noted that in the days since the E3 press conference, "the importance of HDMI has come earlier than expected." At the time of E3, no television included HDMI support, said Kutaragi. In the months since, however, HDMI has solidified and has been introduced to more products. Therefore, Sony has decided to include HDMI in the console.

!Update! Sony just posted this press release confirming the price drop (Japan only) and HDMI-support. Word in the press room is that HDMI support for the lower-priced console is worldwide. The press release is in Japanese only for now.]

Business-wise, they're stupid to lower the price at launch. They would've had no problems selling it at their original price (and then some) and still be way short on supply. They could've lowered the price in 6 months. There might be some bad will from those that bought on launch, but many of those people would've paid a crazy premium anyway.

However, it's good that they're listening to people's criticism and adapting.
