I just found something sweet called iPod Linux.

It changes your iPod's OS and I think it's much more useful.

[img5b9371b2ed]http/" alt=""/img96.imageshack.us/img="96/8053" alt=""/img0121ex9.th.jpg[/img5b9371b2ed][=http//img="96.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0121ex9.jpg][img5b9371b2ed]http/" alt=""/img96.imageshack.us/img="96/8053" alt=""/img0121ex9.th.jpg[/img5b9371b2ed]

You can also change the theme and stuff.

Photo taken with my Canon sd630 from Freepay ) You can see the quality of the camera by looking at the earbuds. I think the screen part is abit messed up because of the screen protector and the glare.

I remember when that was really simple and couldn't do very much at all. Good to see it has improved.

However, the last version I saw had really awful sound quality. How's the sound quality on this one?

Good to see they [bc06667a9d5]finally[/bc06667a9d5] figured out the chipset on the 4th/5th gen iPods... The UI was very barebones.

VrExe

The program I installed is called RockBox. Can be found at Rockbox.org. They are the improved versions of iPod Linux.

The sound quality is like iPod itself. Clear and crisp. In fact it's actually better in someways because bass and such can all be controlled just like in winamp.

I played around in the features section and discovered they had alot of homebrew games. Including Doom, Pacman, bejwelled, tetris, pong, chess, and much much more. (Of course the names aren't called those for obvious reasons.)

It wasn't really hard to install. The steps are almost fool-proof. I'm not much of a tech guy myself and I was able to do it.

The beauty of this program is that you can have that OS as well as the original Apple OS. So you can have a 2-in-1 iPod!

Rockbox is installed completely away from the original iPod OS system. Therefore installing rockbox will not affect any settings of your original iPod. When you install Rockbox, you make a partition of the iPod harddrive system for use with rockbox OS. Uninstalling it is simple as well you just delete that partitioned hard drive. I don't fully know what happens in the process of uninstalling and I don't really think I'm going to need to uninstall it.

As for the bricking your iPod, I don't think there is any 100% guarantee, of course it's like any other software, you use it and whatever happens is your responsibility. But like I explained above, the installing part is really easy as long as you follow the step by step. They are very detailed so it's not too hard. Make sure you read before you start anything so that you are prepared.

As for the dual OS usage, when you turn on your ipod it will shut down the rockbox OS system. Next time you turn off, you just need to keep the menu button pressed until it reads rebooting original firmware, it will boot the original firmware and it will stay that way even after you shut down like nothing happened. After that if you want to switch to rockbox again, you just reset the ipod by holding menu+middle button and rockbox will load.

There are so many features if I wanted to describe you what I discovered, I would be writing a novel.

One thing about rockbox is that it is a folder-based OS system. So, you have to upload the music in any folder in the root folder of the iPod. Therefore, no you can't listen to any of the music you already have. ( It sucks but I kinda like the folder system so I don't mind reuploading.

The OS system doesn't take too much space. less than 1gig.

By the way, I'm trying to take a movie of rockbox in action using my SD 630 but like most other videos on Youtube, the screen is very fuzzy. Any pro-photographers, do you have any tips for taking clear videos of the iPod in action?

On a digital camera, use the "macro" option. If using flash, try to keep the camera a bit distant and use the zoom. Ya.

Have you read the instructions on their site? I thought it was pretty easy.

All you basiclaly have to do is download all their stuff on the instructions list. Open up the Command window from Start>Run then type CMD and press enter.

Just type in whatever the instruction tells you from that command menu.

FOR THOES OF YOU WHO COULDN'T FIGURE THIS OUT, MAKE SURE YOU READ THE MANUAL FIRST

Here is a directory of the manuals depending on what you are installing this on - Click on the "online" link below your model

Here is the link for the ipod video 5g

I read this and it was very easy and I got it working.

Some helpful things

The website is www.rockbox.org if you didn't know.

You will not be using ITUNES anymore, and you will have to change where your music is located on your ipod. Your music will go into folders on the root of your drive, thats where rockbox reads it from.

-WPG Gallery (themes) - Choose your model on the page

-The INDEX page located on the left side of the site. It has pretty much everything you need to know, howtos, FAQ's, Customizing..ect.

There are tons of customizable things on here and I don't know much about it, I believe you can even have a gameboy emulator on it.
