I've been looking into foreign language films a bit lately. There are several that have gained popularity here in the USA. Can anyone recommend some good/"must-see" foreign films?
To start it off, here's a few that i've seen
-Pan's Labyrinth (spanish)
-Battle Royale (japanese)
-OldBoy (korean)
-Amelie (french)
Anyone else know of some good ones?

I believe "Oldboy" is a Korean movie, not a Japanese one.
As for movies I recommend, I really like "Battle of Wits". Its a Chinese movie about war (in a way, its not just a bloody fight movie) and its really well thought out and smart. Great story and a lot of likeable characters.
Also, "Ran" is great too. Its a old Japanese film which is like a movie version of King Lear.

I dunno if this counts. I just thought of it. It's a brittish movie, but it's like really brittish and i needed subtitles to understand it. But it is an awesome movie that my friend introduced me to.

Battle Royale is one of my favorite movies. If you haven't seen part 2, I'd recommend it. Everyone says it doesn't live up to the first, and it doesn't, but it's still a good movie.
Pan's Labyrinth was good too.
Djöflaeyjan "Devil's Island" (icelandic)
It's based on a true story.

Yes, I did. I couldn't get past the accents lol Even after seeing it like three times I still needed the subs to get all the words.
I'm really not good with accents, I can get a lot of them but if I get stuck on like one word I will lose track of whats going on and try to figure out what that last word was and before I know it I missed 10 minutes of the movie.
I needed subs for Layer Cake which isn't nearly as bad as Trainspotting oops

Are foreign films hard to follow with subtitles?

No, not at all. I really dislike it when people say they don't like foreign films because they have to read and it's too much work. It's not hard to follow. Those people who say that are lazy and don't appreciate films to begin with.

I think I've seen one foreign film, it was a Jet Lei movie (if that even counts) but I don't really remember realizing it was in subtitles...I think I was so into the movie that I never even paid attention to the reading part of it. But I wasn't sure if all sibtitles were like that or if I just happened to really like that movie. Thanks!

It's funny the wife dragged me to a french film...and i thought I wouldn't understand it even with subtitles but it wasn't hard to follow at all and was good.
