So my father has Windows 98SE...LOL!

So he opened Internet Explorer, and sometimes it's scheduled to automatically go to Windows Update, so it did...and this is what came up. Seriously, I don't know what Microsoft's been thinking lately. P

Again, he's running Windows 98SE, why would it tell him it doesn't support Macintosh? LOL!

I thought that Microsoft dropped support for 98, and if that's true then that could offer a possible explanation.

Yes, they did drop support for 98, but why would it say it's for Microsoft Windows operating systems only (It's thinking it's a Mac)? It should (used to) say that support is no longer available. It shouldn't think that it's not a Microsoft Windows operating system anymore, because it is. D

Maybe in the midst of all the amazing programming licoughli that Microsoft has unveiled recently, they goofed a little and it now makes Windows 98 seem like Mac OS ... I don't know, though. I am merely speculating as to why Microsoft has forsaken one of its own.
And no, I have nothing too major against Windows, before anyone asks.
Easy. Because the software merely recognizes whether it supports the particular OS or not, and if it doesn't, it assumes it's Mac.

Or...they are so embarrassed by windows 98 all together and figure anyone running 98 doesn't have a clue to begin w/ so they can pawn the terrible system off on Mac.

I will defend Windows 98SE ... it was a (pretty) solid operating system. If the problem was happening with Windows NT, ME, or 2000, then I could agree with you ... but 98SE was, as I said, pretty solid.

98 and 2000 were both great for me, pretty rock solid. Never had a need to use NT, but ME was an absolute joke.

98SE has been dropped by Microsoft, so why support it, act like it's supported, or lead a customer to a false understanding? Microsoft doesn't support 98SE, so instead of making a whole page where it says that it's not supported, they figure they'll just take it out of the recognition code that would bring the user to the real windows update site and thus leading them to believe that there were still being updates released.
I think it's a mistake of Microsoft, since I know there's a good chunk of users still using Windows 98SE, including your father. If the update you are looking for causes your father to not need or hampers his use of the computer, I suggest looking for a new machine. If he does minimal things, word processing, internet use, and the like. Why upgrade to something that doesn't work?

It was just a scheduled auto-update thing. When he runs Internet Explorer on a certain day, it automatically goes to the Windows Update site.

He won't be able to use the interface for his speakers. It's a program that came with his Altec Lansing speakers that enables him to control each speaker seperately, left, right, subwoofer. He loves them and he doesn't want to update his speakers. If there was a way he could control each speaker seperately without that program, then he would probably consider it. But a lot of things have changed, and there are no drivers for his speakers for Windows XP, etc.
I mean I guess he could format and install 98SE again, but I don't think it's worth it. Right now he's got a 333Mhz processor with 384MB of RAM.

So...he's hanging onto an outdated computer because he can't figure out how to use an equalizer? You can do those things on any modern media player. You don't need the crappy software program that came with the speakers. Stop being cheap, dump that POS and buy a cheap PC.
Wolfeman

Seriously! You can put it on a CC and pay it off over the year. 98 [i1c30c681dc]was[/i1c30c681dc] solid but that computer is a steaming pile of crap...
TFOAF
09-04-2007 13:08:44
...It's not an equalizer he needs...it's special drivers/software that is only compatible with 98. It's not a sound card driver, it's the speakers drivers...where he can control certain settings for each individual speaker...you can't do that with any other software, which is why he loves his speakers, and he loves listening to music on them.

Still, tell his ass to get a new computer off slickdeals. like the one posted above. tell him that if he gets a new system, his word typing, music listening, porn watching, msn chatting, and internet exploring days will go ALOT, i mean ALOT!!, faster with a new comp. 8)
