Imus: FIRED....and maybe killed a man

Don Imus was fired from CBS radio today, after 30 years on the air. This followed his firing from MS-NBC who aired the televised simulcast of his radio show. Despite public statements, both were precipitated by advertisers pulling commercials due to pressure from certain groups.
To top it off, NJ Governor John Corzine is in critical condition tonight after being run off the highway in a hit and run accident on the way to that meeting between Don Imus and the Rutgers Women's basketball team.
I think the bar has just been raised for Opie & Anthony...

Yeah me too. He said some really stupid things but I think the reaction from some of those groups was vicious. Sharpton also made a whole spectacle out of it.
He doesn't deserve to be fired given the good things he's done for others IMO.

For MS-NBC to fire him before his annual telethon fund raising broadcast to benefit terminally ill children was abominable. They could have at least waited another day.

I saw the same as you, but I kept the TV on, and a little over 2 hours ago they came back on and downgraded his condition to critical, but only because the staff didn't disclose that to the press initially. (He didn't get worse, he was critical coming in) They didn't say "life threatening", but they did say "critical condition" when they updated the story. They also said the driver refused to allow the release of the details of his condition. (Sounded weird) This was all on WABC CH 7.

CAMDEN, New Jersey — Gov. Jon S. Corzine was critically injured Thursday when his motorcade crashed en route to a meeting between radio personality Don Imus and the Rutgers women's basketball team, a doctor said.
Corzine, 60, suffered numerous broken bones but his injuries were not considered life-threatening, officials said. He was recuperating early Friday at Cooper University Hospital in critical but stable condition after two hours of surgery to repair a seriously damaged leg and other injuries.
Dr. Robert Ostrum, who performed the surgery, said it was successful but noted that the governor would need two more operations on his leg in the coming days. Doctors also inserted a breathing tube that would remain "for days to weeks, until (Corzine) is able to breathe on his own again," Ostrum said.
Corzine, who was conscious when he arrived at the hospital, had a broken sternum, a broken collarbone, a slight fracture of his lower vertebrae, a broken left leg, six broken ribs on each side and a laceration on his head, said Dr. Steven Ross, head of trauma for the hospital. He did not sustain any brain or spinal cord damage, doctors said.

Oh yeah. I bet Don regrets not making the most of that last show. Now he doesn't even have radio to fight back with. (
Personally, I didn't see it so much as racist... I saw him just trying to be "hip and cool"... Regardless, I don't like the guy, he's always been an irritating prick and I'm not sad to see him go...
I think he would have still had his show if he just kept his mouth shut and didn't go on Al Sharpton's show (aside from the numerous advertisers dropping out on his show, I think the "you people" remark on Sharpton's show was the final nail in the coffin because that black woman that was speaking to him was constantly questioning him about those two words).
In short, I don't think he should have been fired for what he said... But then again, it makes no impact to me if he still has a show or not.

I agree 100% about him being on Sharpton's show. That will be a lifelong regret, I'm sure. What a mistake...
Much of the negative press Imus has gotten in the [i3b21289b86]past[/i3b21289b86] has been filtered through ol' Howie, so I take most of it with a grain of salt (Especially considering more recent evidence of Stern's dishonesty). That said, Imus had almost been a non-entity to me. He straddled the line between "Hot talk" and political commentary radio for so long that he was hardly relevant in either.
However, the context of what he said couldn't possibly be construed in any other way than an attempt at a joke. A bad one, for sure. He may be an ass, but he was more of a victim here than anyone else. I think that will be the legacy of this despite those who are trying to turn it to their own purposes.
Tholek

On the Corzine side of this...
Anyone else find it weird that a motorcade allowed a hit and run on the Governors SUV, and didn't catch the guy? That and the fact the driver specifically refused to have his injuries disclosed struck me as odd.

He shouldn't have been fired. I don't even see his comment as racist. It's not like he said all black people are "nappy headed". I'm not saying what he said wasn't a dick thing to say to the Rutgers team, but he didn't say it to all black people. Besides, it was a joke, and comedians say shit like that all the time.

Killer, you don't have to direct an insult to ALL people of an ethnic group for it to be considered a racist remark. If a person calls one black person the N-word or one Hispanic a "wetback" then it qualifies as a racist comment, regardless of whether they truly have racism in their heart.
What he said was incredibly stupid, but I have to agree it was overblown in the media. IMO his employers should have seen this coming given his previous comments, and handled it accordingly. Free speech doesn't apply in this or any other employee/employer relationship, so if his views were seen as damaging to the company (as they should have been) then he should have been fired long ago for that, not just because of loudmouths like Sharpton and the liberal media.
I too was immediately wondering when Sharpton was going to respond to the Duke Lacrosse fiasco, and it brought back memories of the black girl in New York who years ago accused some white man/men of assaulting her and locking her in a car trunk, only to confess later it was a hoax. Sharpton was calling for blood then too. I hate a hypocrite...

I'm black and I agree with dmorris68.....
However, I do see a huge double standard in America concerning "free speech". Whites in these days can't say shit at other races of but other races can crap on them all the time and it's not fair in a sense.
But then again, I guess with blacks getting whipped in the back 50 years ago that it's probably the biggest reason for the double standard today.
As much as I feel sorry for these "nappy headed hoes".... I know in about 7 days they'll be at the club shaking the ass for the incredible lyrices of a rapper named "Mims" with his intellutual speech that uplifts black people.

i am a rutgers fan. lived in the same town as most of the campus, have tons of friends who went there, my dad went back to school there now. i grew up in central NJ surrounded by different minority groups. it was a great experience for life in general. I am against stereotypes and of course racism but i think that this all has been blown out of proportion. the media and the watch dog groups are only interested in headlines and publicity. if it involves preventing a half million dollars from going to a charity by insisting imus get fired this week they do not care.
i also think that the rutgers crew should have said enough is enough for now. they should have been the bigger person, the more tolerant person, the more educated person who stated that they were going to meet face to face with imus before castrating the mans livelihood. I bet this Am they think differently of the man after the meeting last night.

this was good read. From what I can gather Imus has been making insensitive remarks for a while and this remark is the one that sealed his awaited fate.
http//www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/10/AR2007041001891_pf.html
some examples
Sid Rosenberg, whom Imus once fired, then rehired, said one morning in 2001 that Serena and Venus Williams would be better off posing in National Geographic than Playboy. He knew he was saying Serena and Venus are closer to wild animals than women.
Imus is the one who said in 1995 of Gwen Ifill, an accomplished, award-winning black journalist of incredible dignity and grace "Isn't the [New York] Times wonderful. . . . It lets the cleaning lady cover the White House."
It's Imus who called William C. Rhoden, the veteran Times sports columnist, "a quota hire." Of course, the work, accomplishments or stature of their targets do not matter to Imus and his stooges. He makes fun of former attorney general Janet Reno's Parkinson's disease.

Exactly. No one makes rhymes anymore, its just some jiggy catch phrase song white girls can dance to in a club and pretend they are hip-hop. The music videos too. Rock bands make these creative videos even to this day and every rap video is the exact same with chicks shaking their asses and throwing money and cars. Rap sales dropped for the first time last year in like 20 years...

I'm actually from Seattle... I've only been in Alaska for a year.
Hip Hop just never did it for me ?

Looks like there are more racists than Mr. Imus.

I wonder why they trimmed the date off that second picture?
Anyhow, I do remember there was a point that when there was a soft touch implemented when it came to removing food and water from stores. The cops let that go, but there were plenty of looters robbing stores for jewelry and electronics as well, who were fair game.
As for Imus, there's already a station, maybe more, that are playing his show again (repeats, obviously) and a number of polls show an opposition to his firing. He may yet return to broadcast radio if that trend continues, even satellite, contrary to h3x's claim. I guess we'll see.

Satellite radio only pays hosts who can bring in subscribers... His show has had low ratings from the get-go...
Also, things are very touchy with satellite radio right now... Both XMSR and SIRI stock have been suffering lately (XMSR having the worst of it lately).. To put Don Imus on satellite radio would be a foolish business decision.. and I would bet that hypocrite racist Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would demand a boycott of SIRIUS/XM if Imus was ever signed on. Even if they did boycott, I don't think it would drive current subscribers away.. But you'll see those stocks plummet even further (if it weren't bad enough already).

Heh, I'm not talking of an O&A or Howard deal. If Imus held out for that, he'd be sorely disappointed. There IS room for him on satellite provided he's realistic, though.
As for boycotts, the most recent Sharpton/Jackson coverage I've seen is a little suspect (supposed death/bomb threats) which smacks of desperation in the face of a possible backlash. If Imus were hired by XM tomorrow, they might try to latch on and gain strength from it, but a few months from now? No, I think XM or Sirius would get away with it. There are far more racist, [i333d106ccf]true[/i333d106ccf] racists, on both networks, and they still are on the air.
The majority seems to think Imus shouldn't have been fired, and like O&A, he just needs to play it right. He may actually return.
Not that I'll be listening, though. ;)
