"Unknown" phone calls

Every couple of days I get a call on my cell which reads "Unknown". If I don't pick up they do not leave a message. If I do pick up, as soon as I flip open the phone whoever it is on the other end has hung up. Today I got another call from Unknown and I actually picked up. A female on the other end said "Hello, may I speak to <my>" I said "This is her" and as soon as I said that they hung up. What the heck is this? It's a cingular cell phone so I have no way of tracing the numbers, and of course I don't even know if they're all the same company/person. And my number is on the do not call list so it shouldn't be a telemarketer

I got the call today from 866-401-1439 when you answer they hang up. I googled the number and brings you to a website for "whocalledme" or something like that, everyone has been getting these calls lately.

If it's from an offer then why the heck don't they say anything or leave a message? It is possible for me because I did leave my cell as a phone number a few times. That was early in the game though and a stupid n00bish mistake. Now we have the wonders of PrivatePhone )

If you read a lot of TOS, they say they are going to send(sell) your information to 3rd party companies. Then they call yeah and see if it's valid and then they sell it to someone else that'll call you to sell you something. I did an eBay home business offer and I've been called by 15 others... If you don't want your home phone called all the time try
privatephone.com[=http//privatephone.com/]privatephone.com. They give you a local number and it's just voicemail, then you get emails when someone leaves you a message. I did it after my wife was sick of the phone ringing every 30 minutes. )
edit Also it's free, through netzero I think.

Lots of times these are phone scam related things. Never pick up the phone and just say, "Yes, hello who is this?". Because they sometimes do things like voice cropping where they just use the "Yes" and that may sign you up for one thing or another, there was an article about this somewhere, I'll try and find it.

Gawd I hate phone text spam. Once in a while I get text messages from my cell provider, a couple of days ago I got a text after using 411 to get a number (I got the number on the PHONE, didn't need a TEXT as well). I don't have included texting (I hate it) so I get charged for each of these. So retarded. I also don't have caller ID so it's a crapshoot when I pick up the phone...but the only person who ever calls me is my bf. Or wrong numbers.

Intentionally hiding or masking phone numbers by telemarketers is a violation of Federal Law now. I'd answer and try to talk to somebody, playing all nice and dumb just long enough to figure out who it is, then let them know they'll be reported to the FTC and FCC.
The trouble is there are technical reasons, due to equipment and such along the call circuit, that can prevent CID info from being passed, (hence the UNKNOWN display), but in the case of bogus digits I'd bet it was intentional in nearly all cases.

I had one thing like that happen to me about a year and a half ago. Mine was a little different. I answered and some chick was making sex jokes and stuff for an hour. She even said how horny she was, and started moaning as if she was playing with.... something. We probably talked a good 30-40 minutes before the called ended with, "I'm 13, and your a pervert," and she hung up. No idea who it was, but was probably the best phone call I've ever had. Crazy thing is some chick (I'm guessing the came one) called one of my buddies about a week later asking about me, but my buddy or I never figured out who it was. I've never heard the voice before, and he didn't recognize it either. And how she got both our phone #'s and neither of us know her amazes me, but whatever. It's a true story, crazy shit.

Yeah, i read about this once. Good point, glad you mentioned it.
In regards to OP's situation, a lot of people get private/unknown/blocked calls. Many are from telemarketers. But usually when you answer there will be a pause, then you will hear the call-center environment background, then the telemarkets begin's their thing.
Your case though, someone is just hanging up. SO it is probably a prank caller. The girl asking for you that one time... haha.... i think some girl found your number in one of your male friend's phone and got curious who you were maybe. My fiance told me she did that to a couple numbers in my phone once a long time ago P
I think your best bet is to ignore it an it should stop. If it continues then i'd pursue it further.
you can look up reverse numbers with anywho.com too. if the number is 012-345-6789 then it is someone calling from skype i think.
the worst though is when it is a telelmarketer from indian or china or mexico or whereever they are calling from and they say their name is "John Smith".... it's like, come on already, i know your name is probably askjdhfa askjdflashdf, not john smith.

I usually pick it up or they continue to call me. I just go through their B.S. (be polite and say no thanks) and they don't call again.
It usually has something to do with "since you've had great standing with visa or mastercard.... you've been selected"...

LOL. My phone is cool cause you can see what state it is coming from. If its out of state, I dont answer it and I dont answer unknown calls either. If it was really important, they would just leave me a message.
