most people here are freebie seekers, and obopay gives you free money... so i figured it was a nobrainer. it's not my intention to encourage people to use debit cards for offers (it'll often get you DQ'd at FC)

I agree. I don't mind a few unobtrusive banners. Just as long as we never have any of those banners that start making noise when you mouseover them. I get it, I kill 5 flies and I get a free iPod (

So we're supposed to rip on it... OK here goes
While the green with the bright red to the left gives a nice bright Cristmasy feeling it rather clashes with the rich burgundy font color. Add the clash of the grey background and you just get the feeling that Santa is going for his revenge this year of all of the kids that had potty problems on his lap. The yellow $10 in the ad draws your attention away from the overdone green gradient and sends your attention hurtling out the window to where you'd rather be. The green on light green font at the bottom blurres the eyes making it nearly impossible to read the text or anything else for a matter of hours. The use of the micro-text all through the add just reminds me of bad myspace usage in a small neat little package.
With that said I actually didn't notice the ad until I saw this post. You can advertise anything you want as long as it doesn't make sound. There's nothing that ruins watching a downloaded tv episode while doing a little surfing more than "You've been selected to receive a free ipod" or that damn mosquito. I don't care how much it flashes, wiggles, or anything else as long as there is no sound. Anything to bring more money to the forum.

I hope those of you complaining about the color scheme understand that Admin didn't create the banner, it's a stock obopay banner I'm sure.
And some folks don't seem to appreciate what it takes to run these forums, in terms of time, effort, and hosting costs. Nowhere near enough donations come in to cover it all, so if you can't tolerate an unobtrusive ad or two to help keep the forums running smoothly, then... well... you can either pay a subscription to be a member here, or you can go to hell go elsewhere.

You didn't offend me, cubbieco, and I wasn't directing my comment to you specifically. Just to those who like to get their feathers ruffled over having to see an ad. They crop up both here and at a lot of other sites on the net that are self-supported, i.e. "free."
I agree about the obnoxious audio ads, to me that's a cardinal sin and one I certainly hope we don't adopt. But standard banners that don't get in the way are entirely reasonable and should not a problem for anybody.

Feed your child, by all means. Not everybody is in a position to donate, and donations will never be mandatory AFAIK. That's why ads are being experimented with, so that the forums can generate at least a trickle of revenue outside of donations. We are looking at some donation/fee funded enhancements to the forums where donations get you some additional features/privileges, but the base features of the forums will remain free for everybody -- you just might have to tolerate some ads.
