Forum is getting DDoS'd, but I think I have the brunt of it blocked now. Sorry about the downtime, guys, but there's nothing I can do about it.

If you could give me the server logs, I could help block them. And prevent them from happening again.

Great job tyler. You're an awesome admin. -). Who do you think started it all? one of the disgruntled bannies?

They're all blocked, for now, but I dont want to go into detail. There's not much one can do to 'prevent' a resource consuming attack like that (the error was happening with the mySQL db -- too many hits). Rest assured this site, forum, and server box are all configured optimally and as securely as possible.
Kudos to you for grace under fire, Admin.
That "Niger, Please" thing cracked me up.

Yeah that was hillarious.
I'm a nerd, but not that technical of a nerd. Pray tell, what is DDos'd?

Thanks, Liz.
DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. It's basically an attack whereby many (hundreds, thousands, sometimes tens of thousands or more) compromised computers are used to simultaneously submit seemingly valid requests for information from a server, like this website. In the case of the attack earlier, a bunch of these bots requested the index of the forum, which required a number of database queries. The mySQL daemon was overloaded and stopped responding. You can find out a lot about DoS, DDoS, and DRDoS at www.grc.com

Yeah ddos is bad. Also very illegal if you use it for those illegal purposes. Most people probably have a spybot on their computer and don't know it. Spread through netbios.
Those 1,000's of computers send massive size packets at a very fast speed flooding the computer they're hitting bringing it to a halt wink
Errr, i think they were normal size packets. Just ordinary requests for info (the index to be procise.
