Best protein powder?

What do you use, if any? Where do you buy it, how long does it last, and how many lbs at a time?
I'm looking at a few different types, but I want to buy as much as possible at once, to save money. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Muscle tech is overpriced garbage.
Six Star is great and the bucket is 17 dollars.

I have Whey but right now I just started Nitro-Tech. They say you can gain around 8.4 lbs in two weeks so I'm gonna experiment with it. It cost me around $30. You have to take about 2 scoops of it 3 times a day.

Met-Rx is by far, in my opinion, the best tasting. Just a packet of extreme chocolate with 12oz of milk and it's amazing. Very thick and chocolate-filled. I always need a spoon to finish it off... It's kind of like really soft-whipped chocolate ice cream.

Thanks guys. I've looked at some of those and tried them. I've spoken to a few other people, and decided to go with whey protein concentrate, 'cause it's cheaper (without the flavor of the more expensive powders). I really don't care about what it tastes like, so I chose to get 10lbs of it, with 22g of protein per serving.

holy shit. that's mad cheap. all you need to look for in protein really is the amount of grams per serving and the amount of BCAA's (branched chain amino acids) If it's decent, it'll do. Unless you're watching your calories, then you may need to do a little shopping. 20 bucks for 6 pounds is an absurd deal. +karma if you pick me some up next time you go??? thanks bud

oh shit. 2 scoops for 23 grams??? that's really weak haha. the walmart stuff has 25g in ONE scoop. It's 18 bucks for a 2lb jug. Granted you need 3 of these to equal a six pound bag, however, you're using half as much powder for each serving.
but for what you're trying to do, it's something. it's a supplement and it should be okay. but keep your mind open okay?

I've been supplementing with ON for the past year...have gotten similar results as with Syntrax and GNC Gold Label products. Cost aside, I prefer Detour (32g caramel peanut)...they are convenient, and pretty good as long as you have a drink handy. Truthfully, most mass-market whey protein isolates are pretty similar in terms of "performance"...I'd be more concerned with diet and workout habits than what type of protein to supplement.

If you guys are lookin for a good site to get some supplements from check out www.bestpricenutrition.com . They have a ton of stuff on there for way cheaper than retail prices. As far as protein powders go, my favorites so far have been Muscle Milk, Pro Peptide by CNP, and Ultra Peptide by Xtreme. The Matrix by Syntrax is really good too and although I haven't tried it, I have heard that the Syntha-6 by BSN (same company that makes NO-xplode) is also good.
Travman I do have to agree with you about Muscletech bein bullshit for the most part, but some of their stuff does work, it just doesn't work as well as they say it does. I would never waste my money on aplodan, anator p70, gakic, leukic or any of that shit but as far as the protein and creatine go, I'm sure they still work about as well as the other companies but yes they are pretty overpriced. They do lie on the labels too just so you all know, even though it says "you can gain 8.2 lbs of muscle in 14 days" or whatever, you most likely won't. The best way to put on good quality muscle is just by eating a lot of the right foods and supplementing your diet with protein shakes if needed. For example, I drink a weight gainer in the morning and after I workout and then I'll have a slow digesting micellar-casein protein shake before bed, but I'll still eat like 4 other solid meals throughout the day and I have gained about 10 pounds or so in the past month and a half so it seems to be working pretty well.
TravMan162

I figured I'd bump this just to make a quick point.
BSN NO-Xplode.
Watch out for this shit. Granted, let me start off by saying that it absolutely does everything it says it's going to do. It gets you all amped up for your workouts, you lift more, you have more endurance, quicker recovery time and as a result, you will get bigger, however it comes at a cost.
The side effects of this are completely insane. I was on a cycle of this and I started having all these problems. Some of them are pretty embarrassing so I wouldn't talk to anybody about them. Eventually, there was a kid that worked at Walmart and he is jacked. Like fucking huge and he told me that he was on this stuff and he told me that he was having the same side effects I was. He wasn't embarrassed to talk about it and thank god he wasn't because it was then that not only did I realize that THIS was what was causing me all sorts of problems, but I also realized that I wasn't a freak and this was happening to others too.
Let me give you a few examples of what was happening. I started to get insomnia really bad.. Couldn't sleep, just tossed and turned and never got well rested. I would get real dizzy and nauseous all the time, my heart would start to beat real fast, I would get really hot and just feel like complete death. I started to get really depressed and moody. It was like a bad testosterone supplement or something. I was just a complete mess to be around, you never knew what kind of mood you would catch me in. It was bad news.
My libido plummeted real bad too. I wasn't in the mood for sex and when it came time to do the deed, I had big trouble, eh...... Let's say whiskey dick without the whiskey. It was embarrassing, and I had to get off this shit because, although it worked and worked well, it was wreaking havoc on my body, and it did the same to this other guy, and similar things were happening to a second person I talked to about it.
So watch out for this. Shit's bad news. I'll tell you something, when you get that issue going on, it messes with your head real bad and it can have lingering effects, and that's not something you want haha. Don't worry, I'm over it now D D
Stick to protein and maybe a little creatine, and most importantly, just eat a lot of you want to get big. That's all there is to it. We are being brainwashed into believing we need all these supplements to get big. Well I just gained 12 pounds in the last two months and it was all protein and food. Keep that in mind when you are about to drop a hundred bills on supplements.
Please Discuss.

Travman, if I want to get buff/gain muscle weight..
What is the perfect amount of repetition for each set? and how many sets?
and do I use the same weight for each set? or add up more as I finish my last set?
And how would I drink the BNS-No Xplode?
After I work out? Should I drink on the day I don't work out also?
J4320

You should post in the workout thread. You want to do as much weight as you possibly can with 6-8 reps. Do like 3 or 4 sets.
gafdpc
13-04-2008 21:33:00
I'm no expert, but here's what I know
Supplements are really not necessary. They make up for an insufficient diet. If you are eating right, you don't need them.
To gain muscle/weight, you want to do lower reps and stick to compound exercises. The 5x5 routine is very popular (5 sets of 5 reps - all the same weight), but you can gain a lot of weight doing more reps (8-10) as well.
Try to do a lot of compound exercises (bench (DB + barbell), incline (DB + barbell), squat, split squat, deadlift, pullups, etc). Make sure you know what you are doing, or its really easy to get hurt.
Don't feel like writing paragraphs that noone will read, so if you want more specific info, feel free to ask.

I've just started working out, have had the gym membership since september of last year.
I bought a bucket of muscle milk for $25 and that shit is actually pretty good.
I also bought some egg whites and make me a mid-day egg white shake (1 banana + 6oz milk + 1/3 cup egg white).
I'm hoping to bulk up and gain 20lbs by July
edit speaking of no x-plode. My grandpa was just telling me to buy that, but I think I will stay away from it.

Creatiine is relatively cheap and won't fuck you up like NO=xplode will. It doesn't really do much for you, but if you must do something besides protein then that's what you want. Take it before or after your workout, it doesn't really matter. I like to take it before and then take protein after, but that's just me D

People worry too much about protein. I've heard that there's a point where if you eat too much it doesn't go to use and you shit it out anyway. There's only a certain amount you can take in per day (or so I hear). I just follow the directions on the back of the GNC Whey Protein container and eat TONS of healthy food.
