Got this email and it seems to make sense but it doesnt work in my car...the pump handle is on the right but mine is actually on the left side of the car. Thoughts....

[quotea6a83a4b8f]I have been driving for a long time. I would think I should have noticed the little secret on my dashboard that was staring me in the face the whole time...I didn't...and I bet you didn't either...

Have you ever rented or borrowed a car and when arriving at the petrol station wondered...mmm, which side is the petrol filler cap?
My normal solution was to stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look, try to see in the side mirrors or even get out of the car!!!!
Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the petrol station or put your neck at risk of uncomfort or injury.

If you look at your petrol gauge, you will see a small icon of a petrol pump?
The handle of the petrol pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the petrol pump?
If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left? If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo). It is that simple![/quotea6a83a4b8f]

Most rental cars have a little arrow pointing which way.

Yeah I think those are just stock icon images and don't necessarily point the correct way. Perhaps a few auto makers or models go to such lengths, but I expect all don't, which you seem to have proven. )

I'll check mine, but i fill up on the driver side and I'm pretty sure the petrol pump points to the passenger.

Twon lives in New Jersey, he's not allowed to pump his own gas.

Only gas station owners or employees can pump gas in New Jersey and Oregon.

New Jersey passed the law making it illegal to pump your own gas in 1949. At the time, legislators felt it was too dangerous to have untrained people dispensing such a flammable liquid

Yeah, everyone knows that. ilanbg was being smarter than you and referencing a law in New Jersey, because Twon sat in his car and let some poor underpaid sap pump his gas.

cough, NJ needed a way to employ people...the flammable liquid part is to explain it away...

I have never noticed this. I will have to look into it with our cars. Though i cant imagine it being always accurate.

I have to admit, I was in my wifes car and had no clue what side of the gas pump was on and I remembered this thread, her gas icon had a arrow pointing to the right side of the car, I laughed
