I just noticed on freeipods.com that there is a little american flag beside my name. Anybody know what it is about?

It means Gratis has determined you are a good American and have a patriotic soul. They've found this out by doing the detailed background check that you agreed to when you signed up with them (Line 35-and-a-half, Section B, Part 240.294C of the terms and conditions). Most likely they've discovered you have an American born mother and father who support George W. Bush by appearing naked in front of large groups with "BUSH IS BETTER THAN MY BUSH" written on their bodies.

... and actually, i have a flag too. probably just saying we're USA residents? Who knows... come to think of it, I think a little person icon was there before the flag appeared... can't remember though

I just noticed that too! Maybe they're going to be opening it to other countries? Doesn't make too much sense otherwise to put the flag by your name, unless it is a patriotic thing.
