My status hasn't even changed to shipped yet but when I came home from class a big beautiful box from eCost was sitting on my door. They shipped it UPS. I'm about to run to best buy to get a usb hub and hopefully a usb keyboard, so I haven't hooked it up yet. I was going to prepare better than this, but I'll take the surprise. anyway, here are a few pics

That is it for now, but I will post some impressions and a pic or two of it hooked up later tonight when I get a chance.

Here's a pic of how it looks on my desk. Note the 3 free items in the picture LCD monitor, photo ipod, and the mac mini.

Very nice. Can't wait to finish my freeminimac account and get one as well. I could sure use the help in reducing some of the silence in my office.

Wow... very impressive! You'll have to follow up with some first impressions. I'm thinking about getting one of those for a wireless (albeit dial-up) access point for my laptop.

Some first impressions
First off I had a HELL of a time getting my wireless internet working with this thing. I don't blame this on Apple - Dlink has no good driver for OSX. The thing kept crashing OSX and disconnecting. Finally I found a driver on macupdates.com that works great.
So, now I am actually using it and I am really really enjoying it. OSX is a joy to use. the thing is TINY and QUIET. that is definitely one of the first things i noticed. my computer was on but there was no noise. fantastic.
one of the first things i did was install a 512Mb stick of RAM in it, so I have no impressions of it running on 256. It is pretty snappy with the 512 stick, and I have no problem with multiple windows open listening to music, surfing, chatting on AIM, iphoto. virtually no slowdown.
my digital speakers don't work with the analog output, so i have to buy some new ones. kinda sucks because the speakers are really really nice. i've been listening to music on my headphones.
i'm also currently downloading neooffice/j so hopefully that will be a viable alternative to M$Office.
i dunno what else to say about this thing. it works well and is plenty fast to surf the net, listen to music, edit pictures, write a paper, etc.

you can resize. . .iturl==http://=http:///url also automatically expands to fit the additional programs you open.

What kind/where did you buy your RAM, and how much did it cost?

NeoOffice/J is cute but SLOW and not meant for any real serious work. Your best free option is currently looking like it'll be a native port of Abiword.

Congrats on receiving your mac mini... I want one sooo bad.

yeah neooffice is slow. good god. the word app isn't that bad but presentation is PAINFUL.
I forgot to tell you guys about memory and I'm gonna put a post on the freemacminis board about this. Best Buy (yeah i know i hate them too) had Kingston PC2700 512Mb sticks for $49.99 a piece after rebate. i know rebates really suck, but if you guys can't wait to get your memory for your new mac its not a bad deal.

I feel like crying it's so purty. cry Will those mini Macs take a 1GB ram? haha. That sounds weird, but would it work?
ENGRDawg
08-03-2005 23:27:36
yes, you just have to be willing to spring for a 1gb stick - there is only one ram slot.

When I get a free mac mini I'm going to definitely install 1gb ram. Thats funny because the mac mini is so small that it makes your ipod look big... D
Well, that's a photo iPod so it's thicker ;)
